Painted during the summer of 1893 in Kangasala, a rural district of Häme in southern Finland, By the Cradle represents one of Helene Schjerfbeck’s most significant works from her field studies of Finnish peasant life. That summer, she worked alongside fellow artists Maria Wiik and Ada Thilén, immersing herself in the local atmosphere and focusing on the depiction of village children. The painting captures the tranquil domesticity of a peasant interior, where Schjerfbeck’s delicate handling of tone and restrained palette convey a diffused, almost ethereal light. The composition’s softness and muted coloration reveal her refined sensitivity to mood and structure—traits that would later define her mature modernist style.
