Very attractive postdoc opportunity at the University of Padua. While the position is advertised as Econ, the group has strong interests in political economy and would consider seriously quant polisci students.

The Spanish right supports banning the use of burka and niqab in public spaces. The argument for the policy seems to be (partly) that it will promote the emancipation of women.
We happen to have evidence that a similar policy in France had the *opposite* effect.

Two notes on our academic future:
1. You should probably experiment with these tools. They’re amazing. But do so with the goal of improving quality, not n_pub
2. As community members we have the power to shape incentives. Don’t reward mediocre ideas with mediocre execution produced en masse.

Sure, we might get some exogeneity into the mix, but we did not compare identical respondents with German vs. French identity. Best case we get the effect of praising a country on X.
In this sense, survey experiments are better suited for eliciting "true" attitudes than manipulating them.
This becomes more significant in experiments that e.g. want to measure the causal effect of identity. Say we want to compare the attitude toward X of a person identifying as German rather than French. A vignette describing one or the other country as great does not change the respondent's identity.
Agreed, in the conjoint example an effect means my unconfounded change in feeling about X after seeing a man rather than a woman.
But it is not is a measure of how seeing a man has changed my *baseline* feelings about X, nor about men & women. Here the departure from the policy evaluation tradition.
I agree & I believe that card carrying identificationists would agree too. A design-based approach just makes the conditions under which no alternative explanations exist explicit. It is one way to be transparent & shifts the burden of truth to the author. As such, a strictly positive trend imo
