They're holding the tools out as a reliable source of information in the knowledge that most people who use it either don't know otherwise, or don't bother to check the output in any event.

Are you saying Google sincerely expects people to verify the output, so is intentionally making more work for its users? What's the point of that?

The expectation that the language model will answer correctly is being pushed by the people who put its output at the top of their search results.
