This weird idea that darker skintones “don’t fit a style” is just colorism & racial bias. It shows. It’s obvious. 🙃

And I specify “dark skin” instead of “non-white” for a reason— I noticed there is a tendency (especially for anime/manga influenced artists) to draw very light-skinned characters who are East-Asian. Not that they don’t exist, but darker/tan-skinned Asians exist too.

“Drawn a dark-skinned character AT LEAST ONCE” was a very, VERY low bar, in my opinion. Especially for OC artists based in the Americas.

Back when I was on Twitter, I started this personal policy of “only retweet character art if the artist has drawn a dark-skinned character at least once.” To be honest, it was difficult! Because, even if I liked an artist’s style or designs, I noticed the unfortunate pattern! 😭
