Unbelievable. This would be a terrible blow to American science, writ large. It would decimate not only climate research, but also the kind of weather, wildfire, and disaster research that has underpinned half a century of progress in prediction, early warning, and increased resilience.

Must read piece on @carpentries.carpentries.org 's brave and principled decision to turn down a $1.5M NSF grant rather than compromise their core value of inclusion.
Kudos to The Carpentries, and let's support them and others who won't cross the first line.
I don’t want the NIH to be fucking profitable, I want it to cure cancer and Alzheimer’s

Sooooo… ICE now has a bigger budget than the NIH which funds almost all of the biomedical research in America.
This is precisely where the priorities of this administration lie.

It seems like the head of the Department of Homeland Security should know what habeas corpus is. Especially since it is a pillar of the Constitution, the WH Policy Director has said publicly that they may suspend it, and DHS will have to enforce that. bsky.app/profile/atru...
Here our piece ( @digital-science.com
together with Peter Kolarz from Research On Research Institute (@rorinstitute.bsky.social)) on how Funders themselves need scrutiny if we want fair, unbiased decisions and a healthy research ecosystem.
😌 Relieved to see that Europe continues to choose #science, and with it, #openness, #reason, and #progress. In a world where some major powers like the USA under Trump seem to head in the opposite direction, this brings a sense of hope
And Svalbard has great fossil hunting! A random assortment I picked up ( and put back) simply by watching where I was walking ..
Svalbard is as beautiful as I remember.
On Mon, I held a livestream on accelerating efforts to dismantle not only American weather & climate science funding (via NOAA & NASA) but also real-time meteorological predictive & disaster response capacity--concerns that have only further escalated.

Yikes!
I can't help but wonder; does tRump not know that almost all golf equipment is made in Asia? Perhaps he's so rich that he doesn't care if only wealthy people will be able to play 🤔. Perhaps it's a crafty plan to keep the merely middle class off his courses?
The White House is weighing an executive order that would fast-track permitting for deep-sea mining in international waters and let mining companies bypass a United Nations-backed review process, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the deliberations.

New: As companies seek to extract critical minerals used in electric vehicle batteries and other green technologies from the deep sea, a showdown is underway in Kingston, Jamaica, this week over when and whether to allow mining of untouched, biodiverse ecosystems.

Not enough. And now one less.
It is stunning how committed Trump is to removing American soft power, built up over generations.
