Similar patterns include excessive hand-washing, setting things up in a space a certain way, repeating certain mantras or prayers.

Over time, the compulsions and obsessions negatively impact more and more of the individual's life: relationships, career, pastimes, et cetera.

...which an individual tries to ease with compulsions: actions to help ease the thought/fear.

Example: even if one has checked that they locked their door a few times, they keep thinking that they may have left it unlocked and that someone could break in...so they keep going back to check.
