Many with clinical OCD can feel that when people use "OCD" freely, it devalues the significance of a challenging, complex condition, and to how those who experience struggle to find a better tomorrow. But feeling less tied down by OCD is possible with treatment!
That's when it becomes a condition and not just a preference.
Thankfully, proven treatments such as ERP can help an individual regain control of their lives. It can be a challenging process, but the relief one can find invaluable.
Similar patterns include excessive hand-washing, setting things up in a space a certain way, repeating certain mantras or prayers.
Over time, the compulsions and obsessions negatively impact more and more of the individual's life: relationships, career, pastimes, et cetera.
...which an individual tries to ease with compulsions: actions to help ease the thought/fear.
Example: even if one has checked that they locked their door a few times, they keep thinking that they may have left it unlocked and that someone could break in...so they keep going back to check.
"OCD" is one of those terms that some people use commonly, but it is more complex than that. It is not preferring tidiness, cleanliness, or things arranged in a certain way.
