I cheated a bit with my last "tiny house" history post, as it was a palatial 707 square feet. Here's the story of a house on Magnus Ave that was the smallest on offer in MLS when I started researching it a couple of weeks ago. winnipegdowntownplaces.blogspot.com/2026/04/554-...

If you're a Gordon Bell alum, the school turns 100 this year and will be having a celebration!!
www.gordonbell100.info Also, for you Tec-Voccers, the school is planning 75th anniversary events.
Not sure about whole chain, but must be close. Keg started in Vancouver in 1971. By 1975, 16 operating Canada and 6 being opened in US. First Wpg resto was 115 Garry. Applied for liquor permit in Feb 1975 and was open by June. It was temporarily closed for a $1.6m interior reno in 1989.
This is how Realtors should stage houses. I don't care what my home would look like as a sterile lab. What will it look like after I've been at home sick for a week, haven't done dishes in days, & prepared meals that I didn't feel like eating.

Neighbouring buildings getting some TLC.
The old CPR Station / Aboriginal Centre I assume is getting the brickwork repointed?
Poor, old Thunderbird House is finally getting roof repairs. I hope they top it with cheap-ass shingles so that people don't walk off with it again.
I do not. I looked at the city's DMIS and there is no mention of that address or the neighbouring property, so no zoning or variance hearings for a new development.
Bob Nolan was born in Winnipeg OTD 1908. Went to U.S. in his teens and made his mark as a singer/songwriter. He’s in the Cdn Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Two of his hits:

Sad to see the T. Davidson Mfg. Co. / Vita Foam building on Waterfront being demolished. I always thought it would be a cool building to convert into residences.

Further to Bunty’s… there had been a gas station (at one time 3!) at Ellice and Arlington for 96 yrs when the Husky closed in 2024. The Esso pumps at Bunty’s will revive that tradition. Here’s an updated look back at the Intersection's gas station past: westenddumplings.blogspot.com/2026/02/elli...
I’m not sure what people with chicken cars (or is that chickens with people cars?) are going to do now. The Bunty’s signage has been removed! New owners bought it in late 2020, but kept the old name. Maybe now with the Esso pumps soon to be unveiled, it’s time to finally rebrand.
It's nice to see that after peering down on Portage and Main for 101 years, First World War Soldier/Bank of Montreal Memorial has been rededicated at Brookside Cemetery.
I updated my history post about the memorial, its model, and its sculptor: winnipegdowntownplaces.blogspot.com/2009/09/port...
Folks seem to like "tiny house" postings. Here's the history of the tiny-ish 707 sq. ft. 802 Magnus Avenue. I see the I see the "for sale" listing is no longer online, so it might already be demolished.

2/2 The Local White Star office mentioned in the article was located in the Farmer Block, 333 Main Street at Portage, right next to the Bank of Montreal Building.
1/2 RMS Titanic anniversary is coming up. This ad ran in late 1911 for White Star Line’s Christmas excursion on the Olympic, Titanic’s sister ship. It’s likely many of the locals aboard the Titanic were on that voyage.

Further to the heritage awards, here's a list of the recipients for 2026: heritagewinnipeg.com/news/2026apa...

"Lick of paint"
No, I haven't. I'll put it on my list!
I was at the Heritage Winnipeg Preservation Awards at the Fort Garry Hotel's Crystal Ballroom. I forgot how lovely it was. When there, I thought of Winnipeg's other "grand old dame" hotel, the Marlborough, and how decisions made 30 years ago put them on very different trajectories.
Cool.
A friend of mine posted a picture of the current state of the Gloucester Apartments on Woodrow Place in Wolseley. It is being sold as a tear down due to major structural issues. Here's a look back at its history before it is gone!

What a bizarre postcard. I wonder who chose that shot from a batch of artwork and said, yep, let's print up a few thousand of those.
On Abandoned Manitoba on Saturday morning, they spoke about my old hotel pub crawls! When the Woodbine Hotel bar reopens, I will get back to doing them. A lot of hotels have been lost since I started doing these in 2015 or so! Here's the audio: www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/sites/a...
While researching the history of 121 Kate Street, one of the residents I came across was photographer Israel Bennetto. He came to Winnipeg in 1880 and was one of the city's earliest commercial photographers. More about his life and work: westenddumplings.blogspot.com/2026/03/winn...
Getting very discouraged at my inability to land a job. Even interviews are hard to get.
If anyone know of any business that needs some graphics done, or their website maintained, even a couple of hours a week, I'm their guy.
I have a graphic portfolio I can share and talk about. #winnipeg
You can find some real gems on side streets in Winnipeg's core. This brick beauty at 121 Kate St. was built for William Ashdown in 1882. Here's a look back at its history and some of those who have called it home over the past 144 years: winnipegdowntownplaces.blogspot.com/2026/03/121-...
I wasn't sure about that one, either. Maybe Mr. Mitchell had a drinking problem and was just hallucinating random cows.
