WOW.
(Admittedly I never got into The New Dinosaurs or that cursed third book I can't even bring myself to name.)
But After Man singlehandedly rewrote my understanding of life on earth and still captivates me 45 years later.
Amazing that you have that piece! One of the more memorable AM species.

Couldn't tell at first whether this was random anecdote or poignant remembrance.

Don't scare a man like that!

Re: the MIL logo, I agree, Sir, though the earlier iteration's superiority lies in its softly rounded proportions, so redolent of its 1970s origins.

I might point out, however, that such fine-grained analysis of baseball uniform aesthetics is a shade unmanly and perhaps beneath you.

I think it's likely to be Ossof or, if he wins in Texas in November, Talarico.

I dunno, I'm not sold on KH as an inspiring politico... she totally flamed out in the '20 primary and only retained her relevance by being picked for Veep. She was dealt a lousy hand in '24, sure, but couldn't stop a frickin' insurrectionist criminal candidate. Dems will need a fresher face in '28.

Did the Qataris refuse, or are the Iranians not interested in them mediating? The Israeli strike on the Hamas negotiators in Doha could've played a role in the latter. Who would dare attack an Iranian delegation in the heart of Islamabad?

Fun illustrated cover to the book, This is Cape Canaveral by M. Sasek. There's a family of three looking up at rocketships with palm trees nearby.

As for the reprint series by Universe, it's great that they've revived his work and reputation! But the art comes from scans of the old books, not the original paintings, and if you compare old and new books you can see that despite lots of digital help something is lost in this 2nd generation art.

Late period Sasek you start seeing more variability creep into his washes, and can sense him playing more with the paint. Fun for him, no doubt, but that's when his work starts to lose its appeal for me personally.

One of Sasek's best. Love the whole "This Is..." series, particularly his middle period where he really found the perfect balance between flat cartoon and realistic representation.

150 years ago it was a great empire before its decline and then collapse into irrelevancy. MAGA's disinterest in history (that is to say, REAL history) keeps them from seeing the bitter irony in this love-fest.

We don't fight, but every year we get confused! Oh, we can have our customary pizza party one night sooner than first thought? Great!

We are both from the Reform tradition, and are desperate to make our lone remaining box of matzo last the holiday.

The reason Moby Dick is the most American novel ever written is because it is about a violent white man enacting a confusing revenge fantasy against a cheap source of oil.

Four rectangular pieces of matzo unleavened bread, each draped with intensely pink tissue-thin slices of prosciutto, the air-cured Italian ham. Understandably difficult for observant Jews to embrace, as it combines forbidden pork with the religiously symbolic cracker bread, but I'm telling you people, the taste is out of this world!

Once again 'tis the season for my annual endorsement of prosciutto on buttered matzo.

(I won't eat chametz during Pesach but also don't keep kosher.)

Set against the crisp texture of a flavorful matzo brand (such as well-charred Yehuda) the salty unctuousness of the charcuterie is a revelation.

I'm disposed to like Prince, the twenty-six-year-old pansexual star of PURPLE RAIN, because he is, as a friend of mine put it, "the fulfillment of everything that people like Jerry Falwell say rock 'n' roll will do to the youth of America." (1984)

I remember there being a protest song about the project by Gil Scott-Heron called "Whitey on the Moon." Plenty of people objected to the expenditure during a time of economic hardship!

If Tallarico wins in TX, I bet he ends up the nominee. Both his oratorical prowess and his trajectory remind me of Obama. I'm thinking also of candidate Gov Carter, whose humble piety played well nationally in the aftermath of the noxious Nixon years. There should be similar conditions post-Trump.

I like Sen Ossoff, but I think the Israel issue is so vexing for the Democratic coalition right now that no Jewish pol has a shot at the '28 nomination, sorry.
