Le constat récurrent de la reproduction des inégalités sexuées dans les institutions d’enseignement supérieur a quelque chose de décourageant. Même si des mutations de fond se sont opérées – notamment la large féminisation des premiers cycles, du doctorat et de certains postes universitaires –, les inégalités d’accès à certains sous-espaces disciplinaires et hiérarchiques perdurent. Pour dépasser cette sensation d’inertie, nous proposons de mettre en place une approche organisationnelle, mieux à même de saisir où se logent concrètement les mécanismes de production-reproduction de ces structures genrées. Notre article se basera sur l’analyse d’un objet encore trop peu connu : la durée des thèses. À partir de plusieurs modélisations des déterminants de la durée des thèses des docteur·es ayant soutenu leur thèse à l’université Grenoble Alpes entre 2017 et 2023, nous montrons qu’une approche efficace contre les inégalités sexuées en thèse devrait se baser sur les matrices disciplinaires.
