It'd be super cool if Congress stepped up and like did their job. I mean just for funsies. Call me crazy for the Constitution.
It's a thought.
When the animal world offers a mirror for the human world.
Sigh.

With 6 days notice my college announced we’d be closed for President’s Day. Florida statute requires us to post a detailed syllabus including meeting dates, topics, assignments, and grade policy 45 days in advance of the first day. It feels a bit like laws and rules apply to thee but not to me.
So the Washington Post is laying off 33% of its employees.
Meanwhile the NYTs picked up 1.5 million subscribers.
Hmmmmm.....
Less than 1/3 of my A&P1 class turned in a study guide that counts as a bonus grade before the first test today. Also everything on the test is on the study guide. Ss that didn’t submit will be the ones grubbing for extra credit at end of semester. 🤦♀️ & we wonder why fail rate is so high.
Tell me five classes you took in college:
Western Civilization
Lighting and Costume Design
Earthquakes & Volcanoes
Statistics
Learning & Behavior
As my students say, “I just can’t.”
It takes my breath away.
Black furball on white pillow.
I swear it’s a cat.
I don’t know what to tell you - maybe your institution wasn’t following the rules or was doing it a different way? I only know that every college/university (all 2) I’ve worked for has required it and a google search reveals the federal requirement. 🤷♀️
I work my butt off to help all my Ss make it through successfully but they do have to show up. At least once the first two weeks of the semester. It’s not a win for them if I let them stay and they fail. A drop/withdraw can have fewer consequences.
Any academic institution that distributes financial aid is required to verify attendance in the US. It’s designed to prevent fraud which is not insignificant.
Yup we all go through tough times. And that’s ok,but our choices (in or out of our control) have consequences. And sometimes students just aren’t ready to be in college, they may not have the skillset or resources in place yet. And some Ss are stealing financial aid which is why there are rules.
But either way I cannot falsify federally reported data.
I think we all have but I still have to comply with federal requirements on verifying attendance. Two weeks missed, no work, and no communication but able to respond to the drop email in less than a minute.
Email from student.
It is emails like this one that make me question what I’m doing with my life as a college professor. I cannot wrap my brain around this thinking. #AcademicSky
I’ve never heard from them so no courses will be ready for students. 🤷♀️
Ugh.
First day for faculty of Spring Semester and I'm locked out of my account (no known reason) and cannot do any work since we do everything on Canvas/WorkDay/Email. Everything works fine from home, but I'm required to be in my office. Sooooo...
Don't give up on your dreams peppermint! You can do it. 😹
The irony of this piece is that only academics will be able to understand the writing. It exemplifies the inability (or lack of desire?) of many academics to communicate to a broader audience. Beautifully written but only for those already in the know. #AcademicSky

There isn't a single problem "solved" by edtech that couldn't be fixed with smaller classes led by well-paid teachers given real academic freedom
This came with a very high cost in Florida for the software which is less money for students in the classroom. Also since faculty have to write syllabi while currently teaching we’re seeing fewer course updates and innovations. Not a win for teaching and learning.
Community college faculty teach 15-18 per semester plus another 4-6 in summer. I’d love to only teach 18 per year. My students would have the most amazing teaching and learning experience! And we still have a publishing or research expectation (lower standard tho).

Oh I’m not done grading but the teaching bit is over! You know the fun part. 😆
A very tall stack of exams.
Tell me your semester is over without telling me it’s over.

I’ll go first:
With 250 students/semester I’m thrilled if I know them at all by any part of their name. But it makes me wonder if that formal approach creates a certain vibe that could be beneficial for today’s students. 🤔
