Nice, how much context (paper refs, etc) did you have to give Claude Code to get started? For my wx coding, Claude has been fairly smart in pulling in relevant refs/algorithm.

Gempak is only simple if you’re not the poor sysadmin tasked with installing it, and keeping LDM going as the data backend.

The second issue is how good your training dataset is in actually measuring extremes in quantities of interest. ERA5 is ok for upper-air, a little dubious for 2-m temps, and downright questionable for precipitation. I’m not sure about Conus404.

There are some distinct issues to grapple with. If we assert that an AI model allows us to sample from the distribution of possible states, then the question of out-of-sample events is something you can’t wave away. Just how good is your presumed distribution? (1/n)

I’ve been using Claude Code to acquire/work with NODD datasets and it’s been great for that. It’s also been good at writing local web apps for visualization.

Sounds like a fun project.

Pretty much. Im curious to see how far Julia gets. After ten years in the Alphabet ecosystem, I’m inclined to investigate anything whose developers aren’t beholden to the promo cycle. (Jax, tensorflow, etc)

Well, I’ll throw out something to provoke debate. With all of the modeling papers and tech reports, there’s enough info to write a detailed spec for an agentic AI and see what it can produce using each language/toolchain. Probably a better use of GPU cores than yet another ERA5 trained model.

All of the climate scientists and academic mets did jump to bsky. And most of the operational mets followed.

We got tired of dealing with climate change deniers.

In the misty distant past of my academic career, most of the private sector-relevant material was either “Get a CCM” or broadcast tv related. Both of which are booming sectors of the AMS membership.

67. Hypocrisy On the whiplash of this chaotic moment

I wrote about how the people who mourn Vicki Weaver and Lavoy Finicum are not, for the most part, mourning Renee Good or Alex Pretti.

Wasn’t his nickname among the students “Big Red” or something like that? (Ken Minschwaner was my undergraduate research advisor)

* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible for an extended period of time, including areas along I-40 from Tijeras Canyon to Grants. The weight of accumulating snow will stress the power grid, potentially creating outages. An extended period of cold temperatures will increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

It’s never good when @abq.weather.im uses your location as a landmark in the winter storm watch.

As we speak, DFW ground crews are frantically looking for the five deicers that were last seen near the old Braniff HQ. God speed to everyone going to #AMS2026

Ahh, I remember the ice storm for AMS in San Antonio. Good times were had by all.

So I’ve got a major life announcement that I’m rolling out on all my socials. After a serious health scare last year, I have decided to retire and relocate to New Mexico. My job now is to make sure that my family gets to work and school. Hopefully I’ll be able to work on my landscape photography.

Obviously a rough draft since Flower Mound and Southlake haven’t been renamed, and they really deserve it.

If you’re taking requests, I’d love to see a random simulation slide to see how they visualized the sims Back In The Day.
