HOW SOCIAL PERCEPTIONS SHAPE WHO GETS AN ENDOMETRIOSIS DIAGNOSIS
Centring LGBTQ+ experiences of endometriosis: A critical mixed-methods analysis

HOW SOCIAL PERCEPTIONS SHAPE WHO GETS AN ENDOMETRIOSIS DIAGNOSIS Centring LGBTQ+ experiences of endometriosis: A critical mixed-methods analysis

What is endometriosis?
Imagine you are in chronic pain. You’ve been waiting around eight years for a diagnosis. Then, after years of your symptoms being normalised and not being believed by family, friends, colleagues, and healthcare professionals you finally receive a diagnosis, only to find the cause is unknown and there is no cure. That’s the reality for people with endometriosis.

What do you research?
My PhD is about trying to improve the understanding of factors that contribute to this delay in diagnosis, specifically for LGBTQ+ patients, using a mixture of both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
My work aims to broaden who is involved in creating knowledge about the experiences of endometriosis diagnosis.

Ellen Frost – How social perceptions shape who gets an endometriosis diagnosis Centring LGBTQ+ experiences of endometriosis: A critical mixed-methods analysis Ellen Frost Postgraduate Researcher in Feminist Social Psychology Imagine you are in chronic pain. You’ve been waitin…

I wrote an essay for @leedspgreview.bsky.social! In it I argue that the endometriosis diagnostic delay is not solely a clinical issue but a product of gendered norms around pain, fertility, and who is considered as a 'normative' patient.

What do you research?

My research looks at how Chinese learners of English understand regional UK accents, with a particular focus on West Yorkshire English.

I am especially interested in how unfamiliar accent features affect speech intelligibility and word recognition, and why some accents remain difficult to understand even after months of exposure.

What approach do you take in your research?

I use controlled listening experiments to investigate how Chinese English Foreign Language (EFL) listeners perceive and recognise words spoken in West Yorkshire English.

By focusing on naturally occurring accent features, the study aims to capture the kinds of listening challenges learners face in real academic and social settings, rather than idealised or standardised speech.
