At its core, the political economy of scholarship was never supposed to rely on ~$50k from a smelting fortune. Institutions have hollowed out their support, the feds have done the same, and all that's left is inadequate private funding.

screenshot from New York Times article that reads: Mr. Trump’s proposed blockade “makes no sense,” Spain’s defense minister, Margarita Robles, said in a television interview. “Since this war started, nothing makes sense,” she added. “This is another episode in the downward spiral the world has been dragged into.”

I had a great time talking to @jackiedwrites.bsky.social about my memoir for this new podcast about queer and trans nonfiction writing... very grateful to be able to keep discussing this book almost two years after it first appeared 🤓🔥

Donald J. Trump * O @realDonaldTrump A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don't want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!
This is insane.
Good Morning to everyone who insisted condemning this war meant you weren't Listening To Iranian Diasporic Voices™️
b&w closeup photo of a black dog—only her lower teeth & nose are discernible. She is more uncanny than usual.
wishing you a joyful Easter
spent the first twenty minutes of book club complaining that the book was too “fictiony” until someone quietly reminded me that we were in fact discussing a novel

remember this fucking horseshit the next time our political leaders tell us that we can't afford healthcare, paid family leave, disability services, parks and recreation, et al.

The real question all the "authors must use LLMs" pieces ignore is how they improve *quality* in any way. There's plenty of evidence they aid *quantity*. LLMs cam generate infinite low quality text. But what book is improved by that? What's a book made with LLMs that is of high quality?
In other news, I am really excited to share some new initiatives we're launching at The Rumpus including increased pay, writing and editorial fellowships, and microgrants. therumpus.net/2026/03/31/e...

on hold for half an hour at my desk to dispute a charge on the company credit card, scrolling to the tune of bad classical music, this is definitely what Kafka felt like at his day job

People in the publishing industry are weirdly quiet about money. But as Wes Enzinna points out, every literary career is underwritten by some sort of capital, be it from a wealthy family member, a fellowship, or a dubious side gig.
The rumors are true! I have a new home at @avclub.com. So excited to join this incredible team. 💜
yayyyy congrats Monica! amazing news!
so true, sigh… I will certainly be staying in my lane lol
I started the year thinking I'd finally write a novel (my second memoir is out on submission) because I keep hearing that life writing is such a hard sell these days, but now three months into the year I am instead writing... an essay collection 🫠
