Mai was so fed up with the Academy teachings that when she saw those Dai Lee agents supporting Azula— someone who was indoctrinated from young age & saw what became of her— it pissed Mai off lmao, that's why SHE MOCKED THEM.

MAI mocked the DAI LEE agents.

CURRENTLY, we go from The Spirit Temple build-up and there forward.

Understand that the academy days were in the past.

The main thing is that Mai's flashbacks of Azula are portrayed in a biased light. It's normal that Mai has lingering resentments for her.

I THINK, Maybe they're building up the scenes for something better to take place.

Because, like if they rushed into something like (e.g. redemption or making amends) in a ONE SHOT comic, it wouldn't be as good.

AGAIN, unlike the trilogies, Standalones are "time/space limited."

5. Even when Kiyi asks, Mai is seen to have some sort of sympathy for Azula now.

IMO‼️ This was the point of Mai's change of hearts for Azula IN THE COMIC.(5/5)

1. In the beginning, Mai did say "atleast Azula is not here anymore," BUT I THINK it's because atp, she associates the "bad memories" of the Academy with Azula.

"Ashes of the Academy" was more about showing the academy's effect on children like Azula.
