As part of some research I’m doing, I’ve been reading the background on resistance to regulation of pesticides in the 1950s-1970s. The reason that people justified not banning chemicals that we knew caused human and environmental harm was also “food security”.
The timeline we are on is a circle.

at least he didn't do something truly reckless like try to forgive student loans
My dad will be on this tomorrow night!
Weather and climate science are so important. We rely on so much basic & applied science for forecasts, disaster preparedness, climate resilience, and more.

Our paper just came out in Science Advances showing the chemicals in the air in Imperial Beach (many aerosolized from the polluted Tijuana River). Thanks to the entire team--especially to Prof. Nate Slade and his (then) graduate student (now Dr.) Adam Cooper.

Not Antisemitism (according to MAGA):
- Firebombing a Jewish governor‘s house during Passover
- Doing a Sieg Hitler salute
- Eating dinner with neo-Nazis
Antisemitism (according to MAGA):
- Saying Israelis and Palestinians deserve rights and dignity
- Using freedom of speech on campus
Look smart, save money #sciart
I say this every time de-extinction comes up: it makes no sense to devote science to bringing back extinct animals when we can’t be bothered to keep extant ones alive in the first place.
“From April 14-18, select UBC graduate programs at UBC Vancouver will re-open their applications for US citizens to be considered for Sept 2025 or Jan 2026 entry - they are ready to provide quick admissions decisions for these applicants“ #gradstudent #gradschool

The NIH-funded Haskell-KU Bridges Program was terminated. It was one of the longest running programs of its kind, placing >130 Native American students into STEM labs over the last ~25 years. So many alums spoke of this program as being the entry point to their interest, and later, careers in STEM.
NEW: The Trump administration swiftly cancelled dozens of international student visas Friday at Stanford and University of California campuses, including UCLA, UC Berkeley and UC San Diego. One UC San Diego student was taken into custody at the border for deportation: www.latimes.com/california/s...
Can confirm this is the case at NIH 🧪🦠
Heyo. To all my fellow young and/or early-career scientists (especially fellow feds), in case you're not hearing it from your supervisors and mentors right now:
- You matter.
- Your work is important. It is not a waste.
- Your energy and your ideas are needed.
- You are the future.
"They'll take your guns, so vote for us," said Republicans.
You still have guns.
"They'll take your jobs, so vote for us," said Republicans.
Trump just cut 200,000 jobs.
"They'll take your freedom, so vote for us," said Republicans.
Republicans are imprisoning people illegally. /
This new study, which found that PM2.5 from wildfire smoke increases mental health emergency department visits, was funded by a grant from NHLBI. And the disparities it uncovered are just the kind of thing that would make obviously important research a target now.

Millions of people showed up around the US to protest all the illegal shit that the Trump administration is doing.
Thank you for your service!
Interesting. Senate votes 51-48 to revoke the "national emergency" Trump declared to unlock the (probably unconstitutional) power to impose these tariffs.
The House could end this (specific) madness right now.
"Should we do something? It feels like we should do something. Hopefully, I’ll feel more like I can dedicate the brain space to that just as soon as I finish my work, which is tuning this glockenspiel."
To be(e) fair, researchers know a lot of reasons it *might* be happening.
They’re just not sure which one is worst, or what to do about it.
And they probably all just got fired anyway. 🤷🏼♀️
Nothing makes sense anymore
Patriotism isn't worshipping and defending everything your country does. That's called Nationalism.
Being a patriot requires you to point out when we aren't living up to our stated values. When we falter. It's being a steward.
We are not living up to the spirit of 'America' right now.
