American cost of living is so much higher than UK right now (especially because of medical expenses) that the 'average worker' there is far less secure than in the UK despite more earnings. Also they work longer with fewer holidays.
The US is a better place to be rich, but much worse to be poor in.
Because of the low rates for average workers. There's a lot more average workers than wealthy ones, so that means less tax money so worse public services. While I am in favour of upping the top end and leaving the bottom alone, we do tend to overestimate how many rich people there actually are.
When I heard that @beckyfrancis.bsky.social was heading the curriculum review I allowed myself a sniff of optimism - happy to say that said sniff feels vindicated by this www.thetimes.com/article/6fc9...
I still run an N64. Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, & Perfect Dark
Genuinely didn't expect that the lethal consequences of Trumpism would manifest in less than a fortnight, but here we are
With December crime stats for London (Metropolitan Police) published today, I've had a quick look at homicide trends since 2003. Provisionally, the 105 homicides in 2024 was the lowest annual total since 2014 and second lowest in the last 22 years. #crimestats
The difference is, though, Hitler’s cars are still really popular.
So I guess @sethabramson.bsky.social is feeling particularly Cassandra- ish today.
A bit of education-work-in-a-nutshell: staff meeting tonight (re)introducing a P.E. policy. Very straightforward, well-evidenced, genuinely good idea, and our inevitable reaction was "sounds great. Which other subject do you want us to drop? It can't be X,Y or Z cos they're already gone"
If you're wondering how teachers are doing at this point of the year, today I watched a colleague get up at the end of assembly and forget to take her class with her. Her 'hang on a minute, I'm supposed to have 28 children with me' double take was magnificent.
It's a thing that we're taught at work (teacher): be professionally curious about all your colleagues, all the time, because there is no label on anybody head saying 'wrong'un'
That's a REALLY GOOD F***ING POINT. How did I miss that??
My autocorrect just changed 'Gaiman' to 'Gasman' and I think that is, in the absolute sense, poetic justice.
Exactly so, Brand's brand was always a bit 'naughty boy, can't control my winkie dinkie'. He got fired from a journalism job in 2001 for going to a fancy dress party as OBL, he always wore 'bastard' on his sleeve. Gasman* did the exact opposite.
*Autocorrect did this, and I think it is perfect.
I'd like to see the line for judicial or police-action deaths set against that graph. In general terms, when a crime graph drops that fast, especially under an end-of-spectrum government, it doesn't mean the gangsters were defeated, it means the gangsters are in charge
It's why the viva has never ceased to be an essential part of a doctorate. 'You did all this yourself and understand it all completely? Prove it'
Basically yes, the age-old primary rationale for invigilated testing- prevention of fraud - is once again proven valid
I'd give it a read if I were you, it's very good. Doesn't mention neoliberalism per se but does identify one of the competing ideological strands in today's Labour as 'neo-blairite', exemplified by Streeting, which meets many of the same definitions.
Oooooh! Will you do any in London at all?
Does seem like his dealer is going to inadvertently become the next Luigi Mangione
I was more suggesting he's gonna OD on ket someday soon, but yep I imagine his inner circle is like the passenger manifest of the Orient Express
That'll be his dealer, the way he's going at the moment
Well, looks like I'll be posting here a lot more then
I'm sorry but this Wrapped thing has gone too far, you are a teaching resource website why are you cosplaying as an influencer
Don't worry, I will fail spectacularly
My principal goal for the next six days is not to eat and drink myself into insensibility

Have a strange urge to put your alt text into an art AI and see what it produces, and then tell the AI that the answer was rubbish no matter what it actually made.
