A bus can detour off of MLK to avoid the area of concern, but it might depend how close the issue is to a station

“No one engaged me and that’s antidemocratic” is an odd charge from someone who was refusing to engage the actual work that had just been presented, but I’m not an anti-woke hack. Maybe that’s just how you do it.

On that “blame the faculty for trumpism” opinion piece:

Important context the author leaves out is that no one responded to the substance of his question because he had hijacked the q&a to talk about his pet issue and we were there to learn about the work of early career scholars.

I was there.

All of this man’s opinion pieces are rage bait. I was at the session that features in his opening vignette, and the reaction in the room was universal eye roll. This guy again?

I was at a game with a more casual baseball observer who was like, “it’s because he’s Italian? Is he ok with that??” 😂

SEL wouldn’t be so important if everything we encountered in life wasn’t so damn annoying. Adult life is like an obstacle course of annoying stimuli, and you have to somehow not fly off the handle because that’s not how people are supposed to behave.

I am forever saying that if refusal isn't a live option in any decision making process about "AI", then no ethical practice is possible. You've got to be able to stop if the thing is unacceptable.

As a field we also tend to be much more racially and gender diverse, and I’m sure that has absolutely nothing to do with people picking up the broadest possible brush to paint with whenever they open their mouths to talk about us.

Have had other people in other fields to my face tell me that education research is garbage. If you’re in academia and you feel this way, you don’t know what you’re missing. We got some serious badasses over here

Seattle Mayor Wilson is exploring a data center moratorium, among other approaches. 🎉

I also went to school with some quant folks who were so sure that they would be free from this hierarchy via their advanced quantitative training and constantly shit-talked the rest of us and made an institutional stink about having to learn anything about qual methods. I see that has not worked 😂

And it plays out in education research spaces too, with some kinds of scholars doing everything they can to mark themselves as better e.g. by not being trained in an ed school (the number of times people who got the same fancy fellowship I did would go out of their way to tell me this was high)

There’s edu slander on here from last night by a political scientist and it’s a story old as time: the disciplinary scholar who feels so comfortable denigrating edu research. Which of course no one should ever point out is at least partly because of edu’s associations with femininity and care work.

I’m not a quant scholar so I won’t weigh in on that particular beef but it was fun to learn as a grad student that the rest of the academic world sees all education research as basically one rung above summer camp storytelling, and that we were to be paid accordingly.

There’s something fascinating about the enduring ease with which academics in other fields shit on education researchers.

(I’d say “some” academics in other fields, but they’re not doing nuance so I’m not either)

AI Needs So Much Power, It’s Making Yours Worse There’s a strong link between proximity to AI data centers and higher levels of distorted power in residential areas

And remember, having a data center in your city seems to degrade the quality of electricity to your home, which can mess up your home and appliances www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...
