Vancouver's three "progressive" parties — COPE, Greens and OneCity — have announced an agreement to only have five council candidates each in this year's election.
They will also "agree to engage in a good-faith effort to determine which progressive mayor is best suited to
compete" over the summer.
Big news. OneCity, COPE, and the Greens have signed a Progressive Unity Agreement. We did the hard work, and we got it done. Here's what it means and why it matters.
Voting for Vancity Board of Directors has started and will run April 7-24. Vote early at the vancity.com or in the mobile app.

Sean Orr has filed legal action against Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim for saying to media without evidence that Orr was dealing drugs on Christmas Day
I've started compiling a comprehensive list of all the progressives angling for city council nominations in Vancouver. It's already a long list and I'm sure I'm missing a few.

“This doesn’t go far enough,” says Orr.
Says it’s unfathomable that Sim would not fact check such a serious claim, says he’s still considering a defamation lawsuit, says he hasn’t been told what the photo is.
“Is it AI?””

"If Sim wanted to let...voters know that Orr and COPE aren’t for them, the mayor could have described the councillor’s public positions and statements honestly, without spreading a very specific and demonstrably false story."
After Cllr Lenny Zhou is caught publishing defamatory libel, manufacturing falsehoods accusing us of being drug users/dealers and fomenting ugly divisive rhetoric
--this statement is not an apology, it's not even an excuse.
Zhou, communicating solely to media, while mayor so far fails to disavow.
Issuing this non apology to English media isn’t enough. Lenny should walk back his accusation on WeChat as well.
B.C. was the only place in Canada that let people 55-65 not pay property taxes.
It was the only place where not paying them wasn’t means tested.
It was the only place where not paying them was balanced against loans *below* prime rate.
If that’s your baseline, cancellation feels very mean.
"If passed, the motion would set the standard of in-person attendance for the mayor and city councillors at all meetings, including public hearings."
This seems very targeted at one particular councillor and I love it

5. Goodbye property tax deferral
You know how seniors were allowed to delay paying property taxes on their home with super cheap interest rates?
The province has changed it so interest rates are prime plus two per cent and compound monthly, eliminating it as a de facto investment fund
Update in Vancouver Progressive Parties Drama: OneCity is holding an announcement tomorrow morning to “provide a statement and take questions on the next steps in the ongoing negotiation process between OneCity, COPE & the Greens”.
COPE and Greens were unaware of this, so we’ll see what they say!
UPDATE: after four hours of hearing from the public last night, it got past midnight, and council decided to delay their vote until the end of February.
because when you’ve been waiting 19 years to build a school, what’s another two weeks?
Thank you I was watching and listening.
I just spoke in favour of the school...at almost 12:30 am.
Seriously: wtf are we doing as a city? How did our planning system become so dysfunctional that this is what it takes to approve a public elementary school?
This is the sort of thing that should cause some real soul-searching at city hall.

wouldnt be a @cityofvancouver.bsky.social public hearing without a councillor DRIVING while voting. this time its ABC Vancouver's @lennynanzhou.bsky.social #vanpoli
Speaker just admits "I am a NIMBY!" Painful public hearing at almost midnight with mostly folks speaking against a much needed public school! I urge Council to approve this project . Schools are a public right. #vanpoli #bcpoli
Saturday is the 35th Annual Women’s Memorial March. It honours and remembers women and gender-diverse people whose lives were lost in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
it's a universal truth that a public amenity, no matter how important or uncontroversial in nature, will attract the attention of a handful of cranks convinced it will somehow destroy the character of their neighbourhood
