The American kestrel (Falco sparverius) is North America's smallest falcon, roughly the size of a mourning dove, known for its vibrant plumage and hunting prowess. These, at times, very vocal birds are distinguished by a rusty-red back, long slender wings, and a sharp, hovering flight pattern. They are often seen perched on telephone wires along roadsides, hunting insects and small prey.

#Insect #Hymenoptera #InsectThursday Sitting on a log shooting mergansers on a pond, this sluggish bee crash landed on my knee. It was chilly even though the sun was out. I left her on a pussy willow branch.

A vertical tubular birdfeeder full of mixed seeds is being visited by five small birds with grey breast, white throat and rusty brown cap on its head (chipping sparrows). All the available spaces at the feeder are occupied.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme of #FeederFriends (birds you might see at your feeder) reminds of that time *all* the Chipping Sparrows came over for dinner. (There's one on the perch in the back, too.)
