Anonymous asked: This isn't quite on-topic for your recent post on danmei translation/localisation, but I'm curious as to why using pinyin or transliteration in translations (danmei and elsewhere) seems to be considered a "lazy" or "last resort" choice? For example, in 300 years of longing, there's Latin terms, which for some less fantasy-familiar readers, might not be any more accessible than the pinyin (e.g. athymia hex: I could guess hex=spell, but athymia=??) For non-danmei examples, the use of "elfin" for yaoguai in Legend of Hei, and I also remember some discussion over a preference for "loong" rather than "dragon" in Nezha 2 subtitles. From the Japanese side, there's also occasional commentary that "demon" or "devil" don't necessarily match up with "oni", as they bring up the impression of evil from religious connotations, even though "oni" aren't necessarily evil, but sometimes just mischievous etc - applicable to yaoguai, mo, gui and so on.

It's true that there isn't a widely-accepted nomenclature for Chinese fantasy/mythology terms, but why is establishing one any less acceptable than shoehorning it into common English terms which may or may not be the best fit? (Fairy Primordial in Investiture of the Gods still comes to mind...) For better or worse, danmei audiences seem fairly receptive to pinyin and footnotes from reading fan translations, and after reading a few plus cdrama exposure, are pretty familiar with the most common terms. So, is the rejection of pinyin/transliteration simply in consideration of a monolingual, first-time reader market? My Answer: Hi! Sorry about the late reply >< Yes I would say the rejection of transliteration is at least partly due to the monolingual Anglophone market at large not being receptive to or familiar enough with any non-English language element in the literature they read. Of course transliteration wouldn't be a

problem for danmei fans, but if publishers want to court a bigger and newer readership with products that have no widespread and long-standing cultural influence in the Anglophone market, transliteration probably isn't the way to go. For example, people won't object to senpai being used in English subtitles of Japanese animes because it's so well-known, but not many English readers would know what xianbei means if you keep that transliteration in a danmei novel, even though senpai and xianbei are the exact same phrase in writing - 先輩 in both Japanese and Chinese. For transliterations to be worth the risk for publishers, I guess Chinese cultural products would need to have a lot more influence in the West than they presently do. Like I said in the comment section of the other post, Chinese translations of English literature are localised to a much lesser degree than English translations of Chinese novels are, since translations of Western literature have being flooding the Chinese market since the 1980s and the adoption of the original language's syntax and sentence structure in the Chinese translation is widely accepted to the point that they're expected. I have seen Chinese science

fiction stories written by Chinese authors that read like translations of English stories, and ig it's because Chinese science fiction writers in general grew up reading translations of English science fiction, so some of them end up writing in the style of translated literature. All this digression is to say that, I agree that localisations create misunderstandings and make translations lose nuance, but for transliteration and less localisation to become the norm in English translations of Chinese lit, Chinese cultural products might need to have the same level of impact that English lit has in the Chinese market.

My OCs interacting. Wu Hui, on the left, is staring up at Jiang Jinye in confusion because the other man is swearing at him angrily. In Jinye’s hands are a brush and some paper, of which he has already crushed in both hands. The calligraphy brush is snapped in half as Jinye is staring angrily at Wu Hui. There is a blush on his face. There’s a fake meter next to his head, indicating his blush/embarrassment level is hitting max! Why? Simply because Wu Hui is so cute.
