I decided to come and see what the @Womens_Place_UK meeting was all about tonight.
The protestors outside are banging on the windows so loud that you can't hear yourself think inside. That can't be the right way to dea with the issue #WPUKLab19

The @women's_place_uk meeting is coming to an end.
I'm very pleased to have come. I've heard opinions that the protestors wouldn't agree with. I haven't heard any hate speech. When the speeches are put online in time I will share links so you can judge for yourself #WPUKLab19

This 30 minute interview with Dr Hilary Cass by the BMJ is well worth watching, if you want to understand her thinking and motivations around care for children who are questioning their gender.

“Together Against The Far Right” is following a variety of groups - but they’ve not actively engaged with ANY LGBT or trans, orgs 🤔

Maybe it’s because their Interim Chair, Kevin Courtney, has a history of aligning himself with anti-trans hate groups??

One of the telling things for me is how consistent the messaging has been over the years that affecting cis women should be the motivator to oppose these policies, and yet trans women being fully pushed out of sports has been almost ignored as an injustice.

Every year, January to April, people accuse me of fearmongering in my reporting. Every year around this time, bills pass. And without fail, every year, the ratchet tightens.

And now Idaho just passed a bill that could put me in prison for years—for washing my hands in a bathroom.

I sincerely hope Imane Khelif’s legal journey ends with JKR being forced to give her a shit ton of money.

In an ideal world, she’d be surrendering the Potter rights to Khelif, but I’m willing to compromise on my vision.

So many cis people, only some of them professional transphobes, are so convinced that their narrow, unscientific and unethical views on gender, sex, and trans people are so foundational to reality itself that they're willing to raze all of society to ashes instead of admitting they were wrong.

By bringing in the War College, Starfleet Academy isn’t just staging a clash of cultures but using that contrast to show us what Starfleet is not. From the very beginning of Star Trek, there’s always been a debate by both fans and its own writers about whether Starfleet is a military. Certainly, it uses modern American-style ranks, hierarchy, and discipline, and acts as the defensive and offensive force of the Federation. Yet while it can function as the military arm of the state, it was founded not to defend against enemies foreign and domestic, but to seek out new life and new civilizations; to, as Sisko once said, “not to conquer you either with weapons or with ideas, but to coexist and learn.” Star Trek: Enterprise even shows us Starfleet beginning as something closer to a NASA-style organization than a militaristic one, with the marine-like MACOs in season 3 highlighting that difference, just as the War College does here. Even Gene Roddenberry, who served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, was deeply uncomfortable describing Starfleet as a military. He was openly critical of the U.S. military, to the point that his pre-Trek series The Lieutenant was canelled after he refused to censor an episode addressing racism in the military, leading the Army to withdraw its financial support of the show. Roddenberry also criticized Nicholas Meyer’s take on Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan for leaning too far into militarization, a criticism I agree with even if, yeah, it’s still a great movie. So when right-wing chuds online insist Starfleet is just a “highly disciplined military force filled with elite cadets,” they’re missing the point. It can function as one when it has to, but it isn’t built on obedience or blind enforcement of authority. It’s built on curiosity, self-determination & giving people the intellectual, technological, emotional, and institutional tools to think for themselves and choose who they want to be. (1/2, continued in thread)

(1 of 2) This was the episode where I realized Ake might be one of my favorite Starfleet captains. People online got weirdly mad about how she sits in the captain’s chair; curled up, feet tucked in, like it’s a place to rest instead of perform authority. Like she’s doing it wrong. Like she’s… perverting it. And to them, she is. Yet, there is a sexualized element to this. Because of course, no one complains when the universe’s sexiest first officer pulls a Riker maneuver but Ake gets called unserious for sitting in a chair her own way?
It’s because to many of these folks, that chair doesn’t just represent command, it represents a long lineage of authority, often coded as masculine, hierarchical, and yes, very often white. A certain image of the “great man” captain, sitting upright, composed, in control. A seat that has been molded by the noble bottoms of the likes of Kirk or Picard. Yet Ake knows she doesn’t need to prove her bottom belongs there, nor does she try to fit the the curves of the impression of someone else ass cheeks left on the seat that that she could never fill. Still, Ake knows she belongs there, because she’s there on her own terms. So instead of trying to fit the chair, she makes the chair fit her. (1/2)

(2 of 2) This is what Sara Ahmed calls “queer use.” Taking something meant for one purpose and using it differently, not to destroy it, but to make it more alive. To some, that reads as a perversion, a deviation from what’s proper, what’s expected. To refuse the shape it demands of you, and instead reshape it around your needs. But that’s not destruction but transformation. It acknowledges and keeps the history, but refuses to be bound by it.
Ake doesn’t reject Starfleet, yet she also refuses to be confined by it. She sees and understands the importance of its values, its history, its failures, its success and respects them all… but also chooses to use it differently. Not to force her cadets into a mold, but to let them become something new. Nor does she see them as broken. Because to queer somethign use is to take something that seems borken, like a cup that has broken its handle; and not to toss it away like its borken, but hold onto the scars, acknowledge t hem, and still find meaning in that which no longer fits its intended purpose. To use the cup as a pot for a planet, or simply a glass that no longer has a handle. Not to ignore our traumas, to say that have not changed us, but neither to let them define us. And that’s what Starfleet Academy is doing, too. It looks at Star Trek and says: this is what it was. And this this is what it can become for…A next generation, if you will.
Also, her sitting in that chair is the most bisexual thing ever, so people need to get over their boring ass pearl-clutching cause it was just cool.

What makes Rowling different is that she doesn’t just promote the juice, she owns the orange groves.

So that’s worse.

Seeing "trans kids given deadline to segregate themselves" and "trans women banned from yet another part of society" headlines *every single day* while everyone you know and every organization stays breathtakingly silent takes such a damn toll on your heart.

I can't help but notice that whenever a sport bans trans women, they immediately begin transvestigating every Black and Brown cis woman with any chance of winning.

It's almost as though some people think "woman" means "cis and white." 🤔

Amazing! In a church in Maastricht, a skeleton has been found that may belong to the musketeer d’Artagnan. He died there in 1673 and was likely buried on the spot. For centuries, his grave remained a mystery. An accidental discovery during renovations. nos.nl/artikel/2607...

It's gotta be studied how everyone didn't question JK waaaay before anything got this bad.

She wrote a children's book where the only character that recognizes slavery for what it is (Hermione) is ridiculed for trying to stop it.

And then it's just never addressed again but the ending is happy?

I re-watched this recently with the kiddo and learned two things: (1) It still slaps, and (2) so many of my childhood obsessions (eccentric inventors, kid detectives, dapper heroes) started right with this movie.

Every time I post about endometriosis and dare to make it, gender inclusive, I always get a lot of comments from people angry that I didn’t just say “women”

And every time, I think about how Rowling has enough money to cure endometriosis forever. But she doesn’t actually give a fuck about women.

This. Folks need to keep supporting the rabid anti-trans funder because "my childhood" or something? Fine, go ahead, but don't expect to be politely welcomed in society if you do it and admit to it.

The Same Dark Money Behind Project 2025 Is Bankrolling A Northwestern Study Recruiting Trans Kids Project 2025 outright calls on conservatives to fund and manufacture more “studies” on the “negative” effects of trans-affirming care.

The anti-trans "Gender Dysphoria Institute" is recruiting transgender youth for a new study.

It's run by some of the worst anti-trans "scientists" out there.

Now, our writer S. Baum has uncovered a massive dark money network from the far-right funding it.

If you watch the show, hell even just the trailer, I will think less of you. I will dislike you. I will think you don't care about trans people.

That's it. It's been years. There's no wiggle room. No qualifiers. You care or you don't.
