Citation self-awareness for a fairer academic publishing
landscape
Check out our last viewpoint in Bioscience:
In an asymmetric publishing system, citation are influenced by unconscious biases. Recognize them is necessary for a more balanced publishing landscape.

Our new article in Science Advances, led by Gabriele Midolo, identifies the main factors driving changes in the species composition of plant communities across Europe: eutrophication, denser, more productive vegetation, and drying of wetlands. doi.org/10.1126/scia...

Conservation requires looking beyond Red Lists alone. Across European food webs, non-threatened species play a strong role in maintaining network connectivity. With @fmestre.bsky.social @vinibastazini.bsky.social @consbiog.bsky.social @mncn-csic.bsky.social

The biodiversity monitoring standards framework is a linked sequence of steps defined by the standards that each step adopts within a set of well-defined needs, principles, and ethical guidelines (Center). Every monitoring workflow would achieve an overall standard rating (potentially tiered) based on the standards adopted in each step. The monitoring workflow is implemented (Right) once the necessary resources, human capacity, technologies, and data architectures have been adopted.

That said, I would love to build a dataset with images of forests from around the world using a standardised framing. Another project ;)
Thanks for the feedback. This is part of the survey protocol. We did not include all types of forests, otherwise we would have ended up with far too many images to evaluate; we already use around 1,000.
Yes, although the classification varies quite a lot from one country to another π±. There is also the issue of plot size and ecological continuity. We are working on it ;) Thanks for the feedback!
Yes, it is always a simplification. That said, our survey uses around 1,000 images, and you only rated a small subset of them (randomly drawn from the full pool). Thanks for the feedback.
You should not need to log in, so thatβs a bit unexpected. If the issue persists, it might be due to a conflict with an active Google session on your computer. The best option would be to log out of your Google account and try again.
Good point, this is one of the image features we will look at! Thanks.
Somehow it does, at least according to most environmental psychologists; answering this question is actually part of the survey. Thanks for the feedback.
Good point, I will add alt text to future posts. But since the survey focuses on the visual experience of forests, I missed the point. That said, working with people who experience forests through other means (text, sensory experience in the field, etc.) would be an interesting development. Thanks!
thanks for the feedback !
It might have been due to server overload, it should be fine now. Sorry for the inconvenience.
π We had too many issues when we asked people to enter their age manually in previous surveys, but youβre right, it does make the scrolling a bit longβ¦ at least for young people like me!
Good point. We relied on an existing classification that didnβt include it, and felt it was better to stick with it (as the protocol is published and approved)
Good point. We did discuss this, but we relied on an existing classification that didnβt include it, and felt it was better to stick with it.

Many journals require data and code sharing. Yet code is still rarely shared and datasets are often hard to reuse.
Our new paper introduces the @sortee.bsky.social guidelines for data & code quality control in ecology & evolution, developed by 26 experienced data editors.
