If I was in the Doctor Who universe I’d never dig anywhere.

Nothing good ever comes from digging…

- as well as having them pose a credible threat to the Doctor, his friends and the universe.

The story had a bunch of main characters but still manage to give an interesting arc to each of them.

Cover of Doctor Who: Lucie Miller The picture is divided into three: - In the left third are Susan and a Dalek. - In the middle third are Lucie and three submarines. - In the right third are Alex and a Dalek.

Lucie Miller/To the Death: By far our favourite finale of the bunch. It has very strong characterisation and character moments. We really enjoyed the fact that the Doctor and Lucie have believable disagreements to the very end.
It was also really good having the Daleks both begin and end this run -

Cover of Doctor Who: Prisoner of the Sun

Three humanoids made of liquid metal are standing on a metal grate floor in a corridor. Behind is an unstable yellow star with a translucent picture of the Doctor over it.

Cover of Doctor Who: Prisoner of the Sun Three humanoids made of liquid metal are standing on a metal grate floor in a corridor. Behind is an unstable yellow star with a translucent picture of the Doctor over it.

Prisoner of the Sun: It's amazing how a simple concept can be elevated with good writing.
The worldbuilding was great - the villains, specifically all felt extremely competent and believable (even with the relatively short runtime).
The main character conflict for the Doctor is also very compelling.

Relative Dimensions: An interesting family drama that is occasionally interrupted by a giant fish. The timey-wimeyness is not particularly necessary for the plot...

The family drama (that we did like) does flesh out the relationship between the Doctor and Susan in satisfying ways.

We don't particularly like how the Doctor turns into a time cop in response to the Monk's meddling and would've preferred a more careless Monk with a more nuanced disagreement from the Doctor.

We were quite surprised at how quickly Tamsin left the TARDIS...

An Ice Warrior is aiming their glowing gun at the viewer, behind them are the Doctor and Tamsin over a view of Deimos orbiting Mars.

Deimos/The Resurrection of Mars: Keeping the tradition of the Ice Warriors being the least interesting part of an Ice Warriors story, this story's most interesting part is the Doctor-Monk Lucie-Tamsin conflicts.

These conflicts are compelling but could've been better introduced in prior stories.

Cover of Doctor Who: Book of Kells An abbot is standing in front of an open book. Over them are the Doctor and another man.

The Book of Kells: A decent episode with a returning villain with a decent reintroduction. It does what it sets out to do well but doesn't do much more than that.

We did appreciate the various references to the Sound of Music.

Cover for Doctor Who: Nevermore A building stood on a rock in a red mist. Behind it are the Doctor and a black cat and behind them a robotic raven.

Nevermore: It was nice meeting Tamsin properly though we wish the story focused on her and her relationship with the Doctor a bit more (especially as we didn't get that in her introduction).

The story itself is a mixed bag - some interesting ideas but a bit slow at parts.

Cover for Doctor Who: Situation Vacant.

The Doctor is in the middle of an X with four people on each of the X's rays (the X sort of resembles the X from X-factor). Under the X is a robot walking towards some buildings.

Cover for Doctor Who: Situation Vacant. The Doctor is in the middle of an X with four people on each of the X's rays (the X sort of resembles the X from X-factor). Under the X is a robot walking towards some buildings.

Situation Vacant: We understand what the episode was trying to do (four candidates for companions, none of which act genuinely) but we didn't like the execution very much.

It's a shame we know very little about the new companion as she was playing a character for the vast majority of the episode...

Cover of Doctor Who: An Earthly Child Alex is standing is a yellow corridor. On the walls of the corridor are faded out pictures of the Doctor and Susan.

An Earthly Child: This story was a bit of a mess - it probably should've picked one or two of its ideas and stick with them...

That being said, it was nice seeing Susan again and the post-Dalek invasion Earth is well-realised (including xenophobia and post Dalek slang).

Cover for Doctor Who: Death in Blackpool Lucie is seen from the back standing on a beach with lights swirling around her. An image of the Doctor is slightly faded in the sky above her.

Death in Blackpool: This might just be the best episode of the run so far.

An excellent finale to aunt Pat story as well as a brilliant departure for Lucie.

The antagonist plays a minor role that serves to strengthen the main interpersonal drama which is a very good choice.

Goodbye Lucie

It was nice seeing the Headhunter back and examine her relationship with Karen (additionally it was interesting seeing that she wouldn't give out her name to save her life, quite literally).

The Headhunter is in the middle of the picture, behind her is a blue-tinted picture of the Doctor. Behind both of them is the London skyline. At the bottom of the picture is a "Daily Times" newspaper with the headline "Millions join eightfold faction". The paper is seemingly held by spider legs.

The Eight Truths/Worldwide Web: This is probably the strongest series finale so far - Solid thought the whole runtime in both plot and characters.

The portrayal of the cult felt very realistic (so the spiders could've probably spare the use of psychic powers...).

The Cannibalists: This was a really good episode.

Fun characters, interesting setting and a relatively fast pace make this one a really fun listen.

Despite the fact that we predicted the various twists and turns the plot still works really well.

Cover of Doctor Who: The Scapegoat. The Doctor is in the middle of the frame, over a stage. Above him are Lucie wearing an evening dress and a goat-headed man wearing a suit. Between them is a nighttime view of the Eiffel Tower.

The Scapegoat: A pretty standard outing for the Doctor and Lucie. It had some interesting ideas and good moments but these ideas were not explored as deeply as we would've liked.

It wasn't bad but we feel like it didn't live up to its full potential either...

Cover of Doctor Who: Wirrn Dawn A futuristic soldier standing in front of a Wirrn (a giant insectoid alien). Over them are the faces of the Doctor and Lucie.

Wirrn Dawn: We are a bit of two minds on this one but we can agree that the second part was stronger than the first one. Having a lot less action and more character/story moments.
Additionally, the Doctor felt a bit out of character in the conclusion being way too permissive of human sacrifice.

Cover of Doctor Who: The Beast of Orlok. Lucie is in the centre of the frame behind her is a Golem. Above the both of them is a castle in a forest over which the TARDIS flies.

The Beast of Orlok: We had a lot of fun with this one.

The story does the obvious twist but has some interesting stuff going on in addition to it. Having some grasp of German made the names in this one extremely funny.

It features twins named Hans and Gretta and doesn't do the obvious referance.

Hothouse: A new take on one of our favourite classic villains. A bit heavy handed with the enviromentalist message but it works for the story. The human element is a particular highlight (even for minor characters that appear for half a scene).

Love the "climate change will return" cliffhanger...

The cover for Doctor Who: Orbis.

A TARDIS that is looking worse for wear is parked on a rocky beach. Over the TARDIS are Lucie, the Doctor, a Keltan (a huge jellyfish-like alien) and a Molluscari (a huge clam-like alien). The sky above them is full of visible moons, planets and a storm.

Orbis: On its own it would be a mixed bag, and it needed to be a lot better than that to justify the changes it makes to the world and characters (especially the Doctor).

That being said, we liked the idea of a story where the Doctor loses (and think there should be more of those).

...The characters hide information from each other for no reason, the sisterhood of Karn are way too trigger happy
Also, the only reason the story isn't resolved before it even starts (by the same resolution it has anyways) is because the characters don't to the obvious thing...

Sisters of the Flame/The Vengeance of Morbius:
This story was too slow for us - it could've been a single episode but even then it would have other problems:
Lucie is out of character at the beginning of the story just for her to feel bad about what she does later.

The cover for Doctor Who: The Zygon Who Fell to Earth. A lake over which there is a Zygon. The Zygon's reflection is a hunman man.

The Zygon Who Fell to Earth: A sequel (of sorts) to THoGR that greatly improves on its predecessor. Our favourite aspect was the personal drama rather than the alien plot.

We predicted the final twist but liked it nonetheless...

The Doctor's prejedice against the Zygons bothered us quite a bit.

Cover for Doctor Who: Grand Theft Cosmos. A train going away from the camera. Over the train is the guardian (a black, faceless figure made of shiny black material). Above the guardian is a black diamond. Flanking it are the Doctor and Lucie.

Grand Theft Cosmos: A fun adventure about two competing art heists for the same piece. A great mix of humour and interesting scifi concepts.

The cast did a good job conveying the characters and their alteregos.

The ending was fun but not as good as the heists themselves.

The cover of Doctor Who: The Skull of Sobek. A blue desert landscape with a sanctuary jotting in the middle of it. Above the sanctuary are the faces of the Doctor and Lucie. Between the Doctor and Lucie is a crocodillian skull.

The Skull of Sobek: While this story features an interesting location (a perfectly symmetrical landscape with a sanctuary breaking the symmetry) they don't do much with it nor did we find the rest of the story particularly compelling.

The interactions between the Doctor and Lucie are fun.

The cover of Doctor Who: Brave New Town. An abandoned street leading to a pier that's filled with sand. The entire scene is in sunset. There is a silhouette of a boat blocking the sun. Over the scene are the Doctor and Lucie.

Brave New Town: A very interesting mystery taking place in a very interesting location.

Well executed pacing and engaging characters.

Even after the mystery is resolved the interpersonal drama remains engaging and heartfelt.

Very hard to talk about this one without spoiling it...
