Palestine Activists Attacked On Saturday night during Bwncath’s set at the Eisteddfod, a couple of our group members Dominique and Leigh were attacked by a group of men for waving Palestinian flags in the crowd. While in the crowd, our activists were pushed and knocked down, had the flag poles ripped out of their hands and snapped into pieces, they were later checked by paramedics and have sustained bruises, a head injury and one who has EDS had to have joints relocated. Violence against peaceful protesters and activists is unacceptable and a direct result of our government’s crackdown on legitimate protest and its continued support for genocide. The Eisteddfod translates to “sitting together”, and exists to celebrate Welsh culture in all its forms. For most of the week, we received largely positive reception at Y Babell Heddwch and around the Maes as we flew the flags in solidarity with Palestine. As a country with its own painful history of settler colonialism, it felt right to continue to draw attention to the ongoing situation in Palestine - many of the acts who performed also waved flags and spoke in solidarity.

Palestine Activists Attacked While we are incredibly thankful for the handful of bystanders who did intervene and assist us, the amount of cheering the assault received was incredibly disheartening. The whole event has left us quite shaken and is a brutal reminder that while there is a lot of public support for the Palestinian cause - there is still a long way to go and the fight must continue. Leigh and Dominique defiantly remained for the entirety of Bwncath’s set, continued to fly the flags (as much as they could without the flagpoles) and smiled in the face of ignorance and harassment.
