Masked demonstrators in black bloc walking up a street. A black flag can be seen, and some carry construction materials.

25 years ago today, thousands of people-- including a black bloc of almost 1000-- took on the Summit of the Americas in Quebec City, in one of the watershed moments of the movement against capitalist globalization in North America. The following is an excerpt from Another War Is Possible.

ME: oh a little Zohran video for St Patrick's Day, probably just celebrating Irish culture, maybe a few green beer jokes

ZOHRAN (2 minutes in): ...and that's why King Leopold I of Belgium is a big wet bitch. Furthermore...

There's a lot more to be said about him, but the point is that a lot of the eulogizing is going to stop at how he was "controversial". Let's be clear: he was controversial because he was racist and used his platform to spread hate and lies.

And when Larry O'Brien was mayor of Ottawa, there was an anonymous blog critical of the mayor. Green didn't like this. He told his people not to visit it, saying if they did, they would get child porn on their computers somehow. When I called him one time, he accused me of being behind the site.

But when a caller asked him to name the 3 rivers in the toronto watershed, and Lowell answered with "Lake Ontario", as if it's a river, the caller pointed out that his little test was stupid. Lowell got pissed, yelled "OH KISS OFF!!" and hung up on him. I never heard him use that river test again.

He was also a petty bully. If a caller successfully pushed back against his arguments, he would ask them to name the 3 rivers that flow into the ottawa river. If they couldn't, he'd hang up on them and call them stupid in an attempt to discredit them. As if a minor piece of trivia mattered.

He was also a liar. I remember listening to his show in the late 90s when the gun registry was being implemented. He supported it, and took a lot of flack from his conservative listeners for it. Ten years later, he vehemently denied defending it and called everyone who reminded him of this liars.

Sure he did stuff for the community, but he also wrote a whole ass book about why visible minorities and immigration was destroying Canada. He complained about white people becoming a minority, and how immigrants today weren't "judeo-christian" enough.

So Lowell Green, a former talk radio host in Ottawa, died. I spent more time in my youth listening to him than anyone should. There are a lot of glowing eulogies for Green going around. Before reading them, remember that he was also a petty racist who used his platform to bully people.

Lowell Green was a racist demagogue who used his CFRA radio show as a soapbox to rant about immigrants and target racialized communities in Ottawa

Contrary to Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe's eulogy here, Lowell wasn't proud of Canada – he wrote an entire book about how it wasn't white enough for him

The Spanish version is “the left liberates, the right oppresses” and once I learned that, both screws and politics made more sense

A big part of our problem is many many many people in decision making positions never got into a fistfight and they’re incredibly insecure about their masculinity so they project shit like racism and bombings as manliness.

University of Ottawa's campus radio station to go off the air | CBC News CHUO 89.1 FM will cease live programming Dec. 15. One host compared hearing the news to getting 'hit by a freight train.'

I'm really saddened to hear that UOttawa's radio station, CHUO, is shutting down after their funding was cut. I discovered so many artists, and learned so much listening to their community-driven programming. This is a huge loss for independent community media in Ottawa.

(Yes, I know that song was about Donald Rumsfeld, but the idea remains the same)

Whenever war criminals like Dick Cheney die peacefully in bed, I think that, if this was a just world, he, as propagandhi suggested, would have spent the rest of his life defusing landmines while being hounded relentlessly by the relatives of the people whose blood soaked his hands.

May his name be blotted out and forgotten.

May the names of the innocents slaughtered for his greed live on forever.

If I could travel through time and murder one person, it would 100% be the person who invented daylight savings.

I know I’m getting old because I have gone from complete antipathy towards Blue Rodeo and The Tragically Hip to hearing a song like “5 Days in May” or “Bobcaygeon” and thinking “this is nice.”
