The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty spends a third of its time proliferating propaganda for nuclear energy. But as we point out in our latest NPT News in Review, this technology generates grave harm and serious risks for people and for the planet. 📰: reachingcriticalwill.org/images/docum...

"It's the end of the independence of the agency," warns former NRC Chair Allison Macfarlane. "If you aren't independent of political and industry influence, then you are at risk of an accident, frankly."

Trump tightens control of independent agency overseeing nuclear safety NPR has learned that rules must now be vetted by the White House and that the administration is drafting an executive order that could loosen radiation limits.

SCOOP: NPR has learned that the Trump Administration has tightened its control over the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

NRC rules on reactor safety are now subject to White House review before they can be finalized.

This includes creating exceptions to the requirement for a permanent storage solution for nuclear waste.

And an exception to the statute requiring all nuclear reactor proposals receiving a vote of approval in a state wide election, removing YOUR voice from the process.

Today is International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day and right now a bill in the Oregon legislature, HB 2410, seeks to carve out exceptions to our nuclear safeguards for select nuclear reactor projects.

At this moment in 1986 (1:23:45am local time, April 26), the poorly-designed Chernobyl Unit 4 nuclear reactor in Pripyat, Ukraine, exploded and partially melted down during an unapproved, poorly-conceived safety experiment, releasing at least 378,000,000 curies of dangerous radionuclides.

Flyer split into 3 sections. The top section includes the group name Stop Nuclear Work Group and shows a deteriorated radiation sign from Chernobyl; the text reads International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day. The second section, going across the middle of the page is split into three columns. The first says On April 26, 1986, an explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant resulted in the exposure of nearly 8.5 million people across 3 countries to radiation. The second column says International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day is observed annually on April 26. The third column says On February 14, 2025 the confinement shelter at the Chernobyl plant was the target of a drone attack. This resulted in a hole in the outer dome more than 500 feet wide. The bottom third of the page is split into two more columns. The first column says A Tragic Lesson: International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day serves a sobering reminder of what can happen when nuclear dangers are underappreciated. The drone attack on Chernobyl is an example of how nuclear threats can arise that could never have been planned for. The second column is titled HB 2410 and reads HB 2410 is a bill in the Oregon legislature that seeks to create exceptions in the state's nuclear safeguards for select modular nuclear reactor projects. This includes removing the requirements for a permanent nuclear waste storage solution, as well as for voter consent. Tell your state senator and representative to OPPOSE HB 2410. There is a footer banner running across the bottom of the page that says Keep Oregon Nuclear Free and lists the website stopnuclearworkgroup.org and the bluesky account @nuclearfreeoregon.bsky.social

Tomorrow, April 26, marks 39 years since the Chernobyl disaster.

10 weeks ago, the containment shelter at Chernobyl was the target of a drone attack, which left a 500ft wide hole in the outer dome.

Right now, HB 2410 seeks to carve out exceptions to Oregon's nuclear safeguards.

On the right side, an image of Thor's Well, a sinkhole like feature off the Oregon Coast. On the left side, with gray blue background, it reads: HB 2410 Carves out Loopholes. HB 2410 carves out dangerous exceptions and would allow for a modular nuclear reactor project to: 1) skip the requirement for a permanent waste solution. 2) avoid a statewide vote entirely. HB 2410 silences voters and fast-tracks nuclear waste without a long-term plan to manage it.

On left side is the top of the Oregon capitol. On the right side, with orange/gold background it reads: no nuclear without the people's consent. Oregon law gives the final say to voters statewide. No nuclear plant can move forward unless the people of Oregon approve it in a general election. This ensures public accountability and statewide control over high-risk projects.

On right side is image of Oregon coast and pines. On left side with light blue-green background it reads: Your Environmental Protections - Oregon law says no nuclear power plant can be built unless there's a federally licensed, permanent repository for high-level radioactive waste. In plain terms: no permanent storage, no nuclear plant. It's a basic safety standard - and right now, no such repository exists in the US.

It carves out special exceptions for certain modular nuclear reactors that strip away protections currently guaranteed to every Oregonian.

The shift from how things looked going into this week, to how things look today. Still a *lot* of work to do, but every one of these bills that gets knocked down is a win.*

*This does not discount the possibility of a legal resurrection for any of these bills via archaic loopholes.
