When Satchel Paige returned his signed 1949 contract to the Cleveland Indians, he included a note saying that he spelled his nickname with two LLs: Satchell. 1953 Topps got it right!

My son and I played catch this afternoon, my first of 2026. I started with some short tosses for 15 minutes, but I ought to be in game shape in a few weeks.

Watching the #16 ranked OSU Beavers baseball take on Mercer. The OSU offense through 7 innings: 11 hits, 3 walks, 17 runs. Oh wait, I forgot to mention the 8 hits-by-pitches.

Mine was Rod Carew, but yours is a better (unconventional) pick!

Did not intend to give you a project! I went to Fenway early 80s, saw T Williams. I had good seats to watch a baseball game, where my brain could fill in what I can’t quite see, but for an OT game you want to see faces, smiling, joking. It was like watching a chess match from 150 feet away.

Speaking of which, I’ve been looking for Old-Timers games that Satchel Paige pitched in. I have 18-ish, including one at YS (1971) and two at Shea (71,72). Did you go?

This is not misremembering Senators as Twins, this is bragging about seeing a rare accomplishment by a legend that you made up. Not a firing offense, but weird that a baseball fan doesn’t check this in the past 58 years.

I agree. I took wife, two adult children, son-in-law, year-old grandson to Coors Field last summer, will this summer (daughter’s family lives there). If I had a budget this is not “baseball game”, this goes with a family outing to the zoo, or Disneyland, or Hamilton, or a Selena Gomez concert.

This is fair, but think you need to frame story as “this is how much it cost to take my family to (a) a Yankee game + (b) dinner + (c) a department store.” Not faulting anyone’s choices but you’re doing three things. I usually skip b and c (my choice) and usually go without family (their choice).

Also tonight: he said his first MLB game was in Yankee Stadium in 1968 and Mantle hit 2 home runs — “one from both sides of the plate.” That … did not happen, as Mantle last did that in 1964. Imagine having his job, and telling lies on national TV to the most fact-obsessed audience on earth.

On 10/18/51, a barnstorming team led by Satchel Paige and Ned Garver planned game in Ballwin MO with an infield made up of players from the AAGBPL. It was promoted for several days. Unfortunately, officials of the AAGPBL would not allow them to play. The game went on without them.

At Jan 1973 Boston Baseball Writers Dinner, guests included Satchel Paige, Warren Spahn, Larry Doby, Luis Tiant, Charlie Finley, Carlton Fisk, Wilbur Wood, Sparky Lyle, Ron Luciano, Earl Weaver and MORE. Two thoughts.
1. Was future Mark in charge of the invites?
2. Why can't we have nice things?

Baseball card collectors who grew up (with cards) in the 1990s or later: What contemporary card sets hooked you in? What did you love as a kid? And was this because you loved the cards themselves or because you hoped they’d grow in value? No wrong answers, just want some education. #cardsky

Bill Mazeroski and Roberto Clemente were teammates for 17 years—Clemente debuted 1 year earlier, and their final games were 1 day apart (Games 4-5 of 1972 NLCS).

Maz retired when he was no longer an effective player, Clemente’s career ended tragically. Mazeroski outlived his friend by 53 years.

In 1967, 6-year-old Mark
believed that George Smith’s nickname was Reggie. I had George’s card, and there was only one Smith in the Red Sox box scores. I had a similar problem with Oriole infielders Bob Johnson and Dave Johnson.

Used to be multiple fights in the crowd every game at Fenway in the 1980s. Now it’s like Disneyland. (This comment could also refer to transition from filthy to clean.) It is no longer an affordable place to go just to get hammered and pass out in the 6th inning.

One of the problems with QT’s long delays between films is all the time he has to express himself.

Should mention that the T207 Lefty Leifeld was a very generous gift from @spoart.bsky.social . Thankfully it came prior to my completion—a 21st card would lead to a crisis.
