Today we have a special blog post on a new NTP tool for AI-assisted satellite review, with the method described by its developer - the NTP's Daniel Butt. The tool is being used experimentally and is already producing results. More on that shortly!

The NTP is confirming a tornado at Lucan, ON this afternoon.

The NTP's Director saw the tornado and conducted an initial damage survey, finding EF0 damage to trees and a farm structure (see images).

An NTP survey team will conduct a more thorough investigation in the area tomorrow.

Clear satellite imagery over a few other locations along the storm track has revealed visible damage from additional downbursts late on June 21. Downbursts at Spectacle Lakes near Barry’s Bay and at Golden Lake / Pikwakanagan have been given preliminary EF0 ratings.

A preliminary estimate of the downburst extent is marked on the map based on the survey, which is expected to increase once clear satellite imagery is available over the area that reveals all visible damage.

An NTP survey team will be arriving in Saint-Raphaël, QC today to investigate structural and tree damage reported after a storm on June 23. There were several other reports of isolated weak damage and possible funnel clouds from storms on this day that NTP continues to review.

There will be a summary available of the survey online (including images)- our teams have been busy, so it may take some time before it's available.

We'll be looking closely to see if an upgrade is warranted, the intensity of the damage does appear similar to some areas impacted by the '22 derecho.

An NTP team completed a drone and ground survey yesterday in Mallorytown, where they found downburst damage to trees over an area approx. 9 km long and up to 5 km wide. Damage assessed as EF0 (115 km/h).

Damage in several other areas impacted by the June 21-22 storms continues to be investigated.

The NTP survey team is now traveling to the Mallorytown area, where a fatality and serious injury occurred as a result of the storms in the early hours of June 22. Condolences to the family and friends of the person tragically lost there.

The NTP ground/drone survey in Samuel de Champlain Park revealed strong downburst damage (at least EF1). Further investigation is needed to determine full extent and max. wind speed, though it does appear comparable in intensity with some of the strongest downburst damage NTP has seen to date.

FYI, from ECCC. The NTP had chosen to not confirm this tornado due to report inconsistencies. But we will now also remove the event from our records as an 'unclassified visual vortex' given the report has been discredited. #SKstorm

At the end of each year, NTP staff undertake a systematic review of satellite imagery to find any forest damage that may have been missed. In 2024, it turned up 14 new tornadoes. Add in a couple of stragglers, and the 2024 count goes up to 129. A busy year!

We've been able to add a few dozen events to the national tornado database thanks to efforts from the public, with more to be added this winter!

We have had quite a few tornado damage paths brought to our attention after people have scanned through basemap imagery. With so much land to cover, citizen scientists (and mets too) can make a big impact on helping fill historical gaps.
