You're welcome - thanks for making such an engrossing game!
A view from near the summit of Yr Wyddfa in Wales, showing a rocky path down the slopes to a pair of deep blue glacial lakes.
Went to Wales, climbed mountains, did not die. Much obliged to Alex Kendall for his book on the Snowdonia Way, and to my knees for magically reconstituting themselves every night from paste. www.cicerone.co.uk/the-snowdoni...
A picture of a hardback book on a washed blue background. The title is Next Level: Making Games That Make Themselves, by Mike Cook.
I've written a book! Next Level: Making Games That Make Themselves is the story of procedural generation - the tech behind games like Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress. It's about how it works, the games that use it, and the art and magic behind it.
Out May 7th, in bookshops: linktr.ee/next_level 🎲🔮

Myself and @mtrc.bsky.social are running a workshop on Games and Archaeological Play (GAP) at FDG 2026!
Short papers of up to 4 pages are due by April 5th. We are interested in any work that broadly relates to video game archaeology. See the full CFP here:

I misclicked something in Lucid Blocks and was transported to a blinding pillar of glass which I have now tunnelled into and covered in green plastic, wallpaper, and dead leaves. I recommend spending at least some time in Lucid Blocks.

An apparently famous painting Zemaiciu koplytstulpiai (Crosses in Žemaitija, 1909) by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis
an old postcard with 8 koplytstulpiai
a drawing of more archaic koplytstulpiai
Koplytstulpis is a type of a roadside / column / wayside pillar shrine from Lithuania. Typically made of a wooden log with a small chapel-like space on top, and a roof. I love how archaic (?) and magical they look! Note that Koplytstulpis is a recognizable word: a direct cognate of "Chapel-Stele"
We're starting up a new issue, beginning with @reidmccarter.bsky.social on Pathologic 3. bulletpointsmonthly.com/2026/03/11/s...
I have a new piece up at @rockpapershotgun.bsky.social — it’s about when I got hacked in Dark Souls 2, used hacker tools to unhack myself, and then talked to my hacker years later
Not Said on Kim specifically - thanks! (iIncidentally I suspect you've come across this in your own research, but just in case: store.steampowered.com/app/433400/K...)
Befuddled please-help-with-article-research post #231231: I'm looking for examples and discussion of "postcolonial open worlds" (inc discussion of the validity of that term), together with formally unusual writing about open worlds.
This week, @sesmith.lol writes about the "algorithmic violence" navigated by sex workers across platforms, how it robs SW of their time, creativity, and (most importantly) their money.

Personal news: I'm leaving my Editor-at-large role at Eurogamer & Gamer Network as part of new cuts. I last year approached my move to Eurogamer & VG247's skeletonization with reluctance, but I ultimately greatly enjoyed giving EG a go. But now after 10yrs & in difficult conditions, it's time to go.
Well then. After 9 years my role of Editorial Director at Eurogamer/IGNE has been made redundant. If you’re reading this and feel I have a lot of valuable experience (I do), I’m keen to explore any opportunities (full time, consulting, other) in the games industry. I am great.
Particularly appreciative of Critical Distance's archive of criticism and reporting right now, given the rate of turnover in the games media lately. critical-distance.com/2026/02/25/2...
Rainsins Assbow Cry (hope you are well, aside from being exposed to my bad jokes)
Much of my youth revolved around the website ZineLibrary. It went down around Occupy in a massive loss for a movement whose ideas and knowledge mostly doesn't circulate online but in person.
Anyway I've put it back online with a *thousand* anarchist zines:

I've done some work with Tarot, and this is definitely in that bracket, but I'd like to get beyond it in some respects.
Indeed!
"Esoteric" is definitely a good research keyword in this context - thanks.
Cheers, I will look into that!
I want to make a thing in which the deck functions like a half-built, half-remembered machine.
I'm looking for examples of solo card games (digital or physical) in which rules or patterns are created and/or identified through play. You have simple rules to start with and the process 'thickens' according to some hidden logic or principle intuited from the cards.
If you've played any games that do interesting things with healing, disease and fighting disease, would love to hear about them - also any writing that explores games of this nature.
