Date: March 11, 2026 Subject: Informational Memorandum Sticker on Water Bottle of On-Duty Sheriff’s Deputy Promoting Jail Violence In early March 2026, a concerned member of the public reported to the Chair of the Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission (COC), Hans, Johnson, a sticker that appeared on and was photographed on the water bottle of an on-duty LASD deputy serving as bailiff at the Criminal Courts Building (a.k.a. Clara Shortridge Foltz Justice Center). The sticker reads: “Men’s Central Jail - make custody violent again”. It is unclear how long the sticker had been displayed, how many identical stickers might also be in circulation, or how many other County residents, including jurors, judges or parties with business before the court, might have seen or read the message promoting jail violence on the on-duty deputy’s bottle. Has the department witnessed or been made aware of any other instances of this sticker that celebrates jail violence on the property of other on-duty LASD personnel? What steps might LASD take to correct this message and the impression it might give to other personnel in the LASD and to members of the public?

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Civilian Oversight Commission is looking into a sticker on the water bottle of an on-duty sheriff's deputy that reads "Men's Central Jail Make Custody Violent Again." MCJ is one of the deadliest jails in the country, w/ a record of deputies beating people inside.
