I get the Vance move to support Orban, both want to players in the threatening global oligarchy, happy to get scraps from the high table. But what's up with Albania making Eric Adams a citizen? That came out of nowhere.

I know how long and hard you've worked on this. On behalf of users yet to enjoy KC Works, I thank you.

In the complete opposite direction of Haxen is Loner RPG. Honestly, I think, if you keep notes about characters in the margins, Four against Darkness is probably playable on an airplane tray table. Maybe? (I like the game because it's simple and it doesn't take up a lot of room while playing.)

No, no it's not. Clueless leaders, managers really, love dashboards, it's information as pre-chewed food. I don't know higher ed is going to work its way out of the corporatization foisted on it by conservatives, but we are going to need to find new footholds for engagement.

But this isn't surprising given the MBA-ification of university administrations, no? Consultants are the gift that gives to both execs and consultants: if/when things go wrong, execs blame consultants for plan and consultants blame execs for not following the plan.

Has anyone else encountered "ChatGPT" can't count. In trying to develop a corpus of generated texts — to see if we can turn up emergent folklore — I have a prompt that asks GPT to return 100 items. 3.5 Turbo returned 308. 4.1 returned 102. If this is a known thing, links to discussion pls!

So I decided to move my blog to @wordpress.com, but it feels like I'm getting nickel and dimed. Do I really need to be a business in order to get better permalinks?

Much the same thing is happening in the USA, but R1s are not protesting since they gain from it.

… and then build a collection randomly from that corpus. (Or maybe you are using such a corpus to create the variability you want for annotation purposes?)

I'm just asking questions because I'm curious, so please forgive me if some of them are obvious! I don't know what you are hoping to annotate, but is it safe to assume you are introducing randomness through the prompt? I confess my first thought was cull short story collections from Gutenberg … 1/2

Curious about the goal here! Maybe I can help. I've done this with legends and conspiracy theories.

Socialism is what they called public power.

Socialism is what they called social security.

Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.

Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people.

Same here! I tried to call in a prescription because I knew I was going to be traveling. I was too early. I waited 48 hours and I had entered that magical sweet spot. Next time I'm in, I am going to ask how early is too early!

If you want bleak, check out the punkrot genre of TTRPGs. There is such amazing creativity on display there (in the bleakest of ways).

I would like Apple News better if I could follow the WSJ reporting and never have to see a WSJ opinion. Anyone know how to do this?

To add a bit, and perhaps echo @dmimno.bsky.social, one thing to consider is the fuzzy boundaries of DH vis-a-vis computational social science(s) and information science(s). To some degree this resolves in the DIFI model of field as "who goes to the DH conference reliably."

If this involves an old-fashioned printing press, color me green with envy. One of my dumbest moments was turning down the offer of a tabletop press. (To be fair I was in grad school and about to move and couldn't imagine loading it into my Toyota along with everything else.) Sigh.

All the "crazy" (racist, homophobic) uncles were dealt with in the usual way—uncomfortable silence, not invited to all events—until the internet made it possible for them to affirm each other.

Loading a 482MB audiobook onto my phone, I thought to myself, "Well, that would have fit on a CD." And I realized I have a host of obsolete measurements in my head: 4.7GB on a DVD. 360k on a single-sided floppy. What measurements do others still carry around?
