Young women exhibited lower levels of political participation, confidence about politics, and interest in politics at baseline. Providing them with both information and a boosted sense of efficacy increased their political interest and their political participation.

Then, in the most recent article in @bjpols.bsky.social we unpack the success of the secular efficacy-promoting course, showing that it is largely among young *women* that this course increased electoral participation, compared to information alone and compared to baseline.

The religious efficacy course was no more effective than the information-only course. We explore why in @ajpseditor.bsky.social at onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...

We then scaled using WhatsApp to deliver both secular and religious messages cultivating a sense of efficacy and an info-only course to over 1000 young adults before the 2021 elections . The *secular* efficacy course was most effective at increasing youth electoral participation.

In the in-person pilot, we found that religious messages cultivating young adult listeners’ sense of efficacy did more to increase intention to participate than religious messages cultivating a sense of obligation to others. We develop/test an arg that when religious-secular cleavages are sensationalized, rel voters no longer accept cloaked appeals as sufficient signals of rel politicians’ allegiance. Secular ppl maintain the same aversion to overt speech, so incentives to use overt speech increase.

“When Do Voters Reward Overtly Religious Appeals?” w/ Abraham Aldama is forthcoming in the JOP! Building on @albertsonb2.bsky.social, Djupe, Whitehead, Campbell, and others, we examine when politicians might use *overtly* religious rhetoric instead of cloaked appeals. tinyurl.com/bdense4p
