Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute Receives Accreditation From Association of Zoos and Aquariums The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute has been awarded a five-year accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

The world is very nuanced and doesn’t exist in black and white terms. I’m including a link if you’d like to learn more, but for my own sanity I’m putting an end to this dialogue. Thanks for the discourse — I learned the zoo is even better than I believed.

It is true. The Smithsonian Zoo in D.C. is accredited by the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) and those zoos are highly regulated. Under their guidelines they don’t take animals from the wild unless they need some sort of rehabilitation and they consistently evaluate living conditions.

It does hurt to see them in enclosures like that, but I also know they are an endangered species. So unfortunately, this has to be done for any hope of repopulating them. Humans do the damage and animals have to pay the price :(
