I heard that he wrote this song as a response to Steve Gottlieb, head of TVT records (the label he was signed to at the time). I was signed to that label as well in the late 90’s (as Expansion Union), and I can confirm that Steve was a shady label executive who ripped off artists (me included).

I found this on vinyl at tower records in NY back in the early 90’s, prior to signing to RH. It was my first introduction to Black Dog. I was hooked instantly!
