If only Stanley. We are not even in the nice offices near Trocadero where the Institute used to be.

Either we integrate more and invest in our capacity to defend our sovereignty- or we become playthings of the super powers.
Nice long interview with @lavanguardia.com ↘️
The idea that Hormuz can be reopened by force is an illusion, negotiations are unavoidable, argues @sbeverts.bsky.social. The EU has a track record negotiating with Iran & can lead a diplomatic coalition. Time to move from principles to action.

Europe should not be dragged into America’s war with Iran. But Europe cannot afford diplomatic irrelevance either. If Washington has lost credibility, Europe should step in and lead a diplomatic effort to reopen Hormuz.
With @eucopresident.consilium.europa.eu now in the region, here some ideas:
Sidelined in Iran talks, Europe still has what Washington lacks: diplomatic credibility. It should rally a diplomatic coalition with Gulf states & Asian partners to negotiate with Iran and secure Hormuz transit, writes @sbeverts.bsky.social.

As Iran-US negotiations have failed, this is Europe’s moment to lead diplomatically again, says Director @sbeverts.bsky.social.
Lezenswaardig.
In a world of rising geopolitical tensions, Europe faces unprecedented challenges.
In this context, today, the 24th edition of CIDOB's “War and Peace in the 21st Century” international conference brought together high-level experts in Barcelona to address the future of European security and defence
People in the Budapest Metro, Hungary, shouting: “Russians, go home!”
True. But let’s celebrate tonight. We need to also savour when things do go well.
Then we load up for the next fight. FR, PL etc.
Big victory for Europe.
Big loss for Putin, Trump and JD Vance.
You are right, Japan is there indeed!
Content as expected but interesting line up; leaders of 🇫🇷 🇩🇪 🇮🇹 🇬🇧 🇳🇱 🇪🇸 🇩🇰 and 🇪🇺.
🇨🇦 also there. Quasi European? But no 🇯🇵 (G7)
Also no 🇵🇱 (Tusk) or 🇫🇮 (Stubb) nor Cyprus (EU Pcy).
Statement says it’s open for others to sign. Variable geometry in action.
I love @jdryan08.bsky.social's description of it as the Heroditus Trap
Apart from anything else, it is precisely statements threatening civilisational erasure and regime change that has prompted countries to seek nuclear weapons...
That’s right. We need more alternatives to US (and Chinese) tech dominance. Reduce dependencies everywhere. That will cost money, cause friction, investing in things that initially are suboptimal but need to grow etc etc. The best moment was ten years ago. The second best moment is today.
My first ever serious job was @centreeuropeanref.bsky.social when @cergrant.bsky.social gave me a chance. Best ever school in how to be a think tanker.
It will be an exceptional challenge to take over from Charles who has turned the CER into a uniquely influential organisation.

No April fools: there is already a state of 3 million people in Europe trying to live and function on open source software, without the stranglehold of US Big Tech.
And they manage:

Good news! Where social media pushes people to polarisation and sensationalism, AI’s LLM may nudge them to expert views and moderation.
Let’s hope the business model of AI which drives algorithmic design will allow this positive trend to hold. Democracy needs it to.
📚 Steven Everts, chief at the European Union's @euiss.bsky.social, is absolutely right, but particularly with his words describing Ukraine's historic President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, "he’s a man who grows in crises. A man who meets the moment" ➡
