The importance of teaching listening for teaching speaking

When listening is done really well, speaking becomes much easier for students!

New blog post about how we can teach listening to support how we teach speaking: bethlingual.blogspot.com/2025/09/the-...

We are there for our students day-in, day-out, and that is what counts - not whether you always say or do the perfect thing in every moment!

In January I started a new post as a head of year so I see all the time how important it is to be consistent with our behaviour expectations, and also how we communicate those consistently, regularly, clearly.

You need to do something consistently to make progress - but not necessarily perfectly! This is your reminder to give yourself the same grace you give to your students, every day/lesson is a fresh start.

Consistency means more than perfection

Consistency means more than perfection

Good habits, strong teaching routines, and positive relationships take time

If you've had a bad lesson/day (or even if it just wasn't perfect)... don't worry! Reflect and learn what you can from it, then move on. What you do consistently matters more anyway.

My favourite activity at the moment: children can see the 10 words we are working on. I say 9 of them randomly, then they have to tell me which one I didn't say. Always goes well and they get to hear the vocab lots of times. Helps to prepare in advance 👍. #mflbluesky
