I suppose a “realist” position is to try not poke the bear, and indeed co-operate with it on some matters, while also staying beyond claws’ length, so to speak. We can no sooner unwind 150+ years continental history than we can the geographical connection. I think it’s a real conundrum.

I mean, a proper system of financial securities and well-enforced decommissioning laws would obviate this need for operating sites. But dealing with the backlogged liabilities remains a problem. I still think some kind of levy on industry, one not so easily passed on to the consumer through pricing.

This is indefensible.

Canadians must boycott the World Cup.

4,000 more oil and gas wells were just added to Alberta’s orphan well list | The Narwhal Even before the addition, the estimated total costs to properly seal and reclaim orphan oil and gas sites in Alberta was more than $1B

The O+G sector is a deadbeat industry.

‘Largest single transfer in history’: 4,000 oil and gas wells just became orphans — nearly doubling Alberta’s total: thenarwhal.ca/alberta-orph...

Oil companies are on track to make tens of billions in windfall profits from Trump’s illegal war in Iran.

It’s their profiteering that’s driving up prices. It’s them who should pay.

Kudz Ze Kayah mine project in Yukon approved again, while First Nation blasts decision | CBC News The Yukon and federal governments have given the go-ahead to a contentious mine project near Ross River, despite strong opposition from local First Nations.

Disturbing instance in Yukon of mining approval granted without consent of Kaska First Nations. The Kaska have a good record in the courts, tho, so don’t count them out yet.

America’s hiking culture is built on ego From peak-bagging to thru-hiking, Americans have turned traversing land into personal milestones. This wilderness ranger and Indigenous writer has witnessed it firsthand

“For years, conservationists have promoted tourism as a “sustainable” alternative to mining or logging. But tourism can be just as extractive and harmful.”

Thank you Joe for this brilliant and thoughtful essay.

Quite the opposite: Carney’s strategy is to steal PP’s policies and beat him to a pulp with them.

Today, the NDP is calling on the Carney government to implement a national ban on surveillance pricing - before it becomes a predatory new normal in Canadian life.

Canadians are already being squeezed by the untenable cost of living. It’s time to stop the practice dead in its tracks.

The number of orphan wells in Alberta will almost double this year. The money the province makes industry set aside to clean them up will rise by only 7 per cent.

That’s a problem. #abpoli

Canada is drifting toward petrostate politics, even in B.C. A province long seen as a climate leader is expanding fossil fuel production and subsidies, a sign of the influence oil and gas interests have in shaping policy

“Canada faces a choice.
“We can continue to expand fossil fuel production, subsidize the industry, and justify those decisions as economic necessity, even as the system becomes more volatile, more expensive and more dangerous. Or we can begin to govern its decline.“

Luckily for Americans, there are other, non-benighted countries in the world researching, developing, and marketing such vaccines. And when the next pandemic comes, we’ll be happy to sell it to you. 🇨🇦🔬💪
