USS Thresher died on this day in 1963. Her death led to SUBSAFE, which is probably why the USS San Francisco & USS Conneticut are not on the bottom of the ocean. Hell of a hard way to learn that lesson. The only other sub we've lost since, USS Scorpion, wasn't a SUBSAFE boat b/c of cost & op tempo.
