As always, Fechin's brushwork is confident and lively, but I find that the background of horizontal and vertical strokes especially takes this piece into the modern age.

At the time, smoking was considered taboo for women in Russian society. This also suggests her break with tradition. The very application of the paint tops it all off.
Everything in this painting conveys the strength and modernity of the sitter. The position of her hands, the forward movement of her position in the chair, and the pointing of the foot directly out of frame suggest her power and directness.
Portrait painting in oils of a woman sitting in a chair smoking a cigarette by Russian painter Nicolai Fechin
Here is another excellent piece by Russian painter Nicolai Fechin from the permanent collection of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. This is one that I have wanted to view in person for many years, and it did not disappoint.

When painting a complicated scene like this, break it down into just a few large shapes first, and then find the smaller ones that matter within.

This one was all about jumping directly into the painting, without the need for any kind preliminary drawing. The drawing happens at the same time, and the results can be just as accurate, and often more exciting.

Born in Ferrara, Italy in 1842, Boldini studied in Florence. After moving to London, the artist achieved success as a portrait painter before relocating to Paris, where he became a close friend of Edgar Degas.
In fact, the portrait feels even more approachable than the usual stiff and posed painting. On top of all of that drawing skill, Boldini showcases his mastery of design with the almost abstract rendering of the dress and the surrounding fabrics.
Without a clear understanding of drawing, the figure can appear distorted or unrealistic. In this piece by Italian painter Giovanni Boldini, the model is posed with a dramatic turn of the head, but due to the artist's mastery of drawing, the image is completely believable.
Portrait painting in oils with an unconventional composition, a young woman lying down with her head turned toward the viewer, by Italian artist Giovanni Boldini
One of the most challenging things for a painter to do is to depict a figure at an angle that is contrary to the expected.

This piece is headed to this summer's Plein Air Easton Competition and Arts Festival alumni show. The theme is "Forever the Forest" in collaboration with the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy.
There's so much texture and variety of shape in a forest setting that it's easy to lose your way during the painting process. I always find painting forests a challenge, and yet somehow calming when I step back and take in that sense of place.

While the face and hands are the most rendered portions of the painting, it's the nodes of intense colors that lead the eye throughout the canvas. This one is beautiful in reproduction, but in person, it will take your breath away.
There are some paintings that can't be fully appreciated unless viewed in person, and this piece is a perfect example. The intensity of the color is astounding. It glows from across the room.
