I have several advisees who have chosen this route, most of whom could have landed entry level academic jobs (postdocs or better) and simply wanted something different. All of them seem extremely happy.

The one thing you might say is a reasonable claim is that rising costs have "eroded trust" in higher education. And sure. But here at public universities, we cannot solve that problem on our own. There is a solution, but it's not one we can implement ourselves. It requires the politicians:

I laugh internally when I overhear someone complain about how DEI took over faculty hiring. Nevermind most departments in the field have one or two token faculty of color max.
The job market has really shrunk for Black scholars. So many schools are doing their best to get rid of us or never hire us. I know way too many folks suing their institutions or the state over what they research and teach.
