For more than a century, a smelter and other factories spewed 400 million pounds of lead dust across Omaha’s east side. Faced with similar concerns, 13 states passed laws requiring all kids to get a blood test before kindergarten. But not Nebraska.

An absolute masterpiece of local reporting and storytelling: 3D-Printed Homes, an Abandoned $590,000 Deposit, the FBI: What Really Happened in This Small Town? by Molly Parker @capitolnewsil.bsky.social
I’ve been in Minneapolis the last few days reporting on the ICE raids happening across the city. This morning federal agents shot and killed a man, identified by the AP as Alex Pretti. This marks the third shooting by federal agents since Operation Metro Surge started in Minnesota last month.
This is 10th-grader Arnoldo Bazan.
A citizen.
Immigration agents grabbed him and put him in a chokehold.
"We're from the United States bro!' he screamed.
Agents took and sold his phone
And when he finally got home hours later, his shirt was ripped, he neck had angry, red welts, and he sobbed.
Yes, immigration agents not only took Arnoldo's phone, the 10th grader had to use Find My Phone to locate it — in a vending machine for used electronics, close to an ICE detention center.

A screenshot that says “UNICEF USA, which supports the United Nations' humanitarian children's mission, no longer wants a more equitable world for every child - just a better one.” With their mission statement and “more equitable” struck out and replaced with “better.”
New @propublica.org:
@emsimani.bsky.social analyzed nonprofit tax filings and found that more than 1,000 charities have stripped DEI-related language from their mission statements this year.

BREAKING from PP
We found immigration agents have held more than 170 *citizens*
The govt doesn't track citizens held. So we did. We tallied:
Nearly 20 kids, two w/ cancer
More than 20 citizens held for day or more, incommunicado

"Critically, there is no way to know the complete scope of these stops since the government itself does not track them."
An astonishing amount of work that went into shining a light on the details in this remarkable void.

I’ve lived in CA all my life. Where I live now was rebuilt after a then record-breaking fire leveled it to the ground. I've often watched fires creep closer to loved ones, frantically texting to ask if they’ve left or if they know when to go.
All that to say, I think about evacuations a lot. 🧵
NEW: As Hurricane Helene barreled toward Yancey County in North Carolina, communities along the Cane River in the Black Mountains were particularly vulnerable.
But there were no evacuation orders, and few grasped what was coming.

I grew up in the western foothills/southern piedmont of NC. As soon as I saw the news of Helene, I knew the devastation in these small towns just to our north was inevitable. This is the one of the best pieces of journalism I have read in recent memory. incredible, heartbreaking stories. read this.
I have written many healthcare stories, but never before have I written about my own health. I decided to do so after learning one of my drugs costs nearly $1,000 a pill and just 25 cents to make. What I found was an incredible story of discovery and exploitation. www.propublica.org/article/revl...
"Israel would permit about 60 trucks carrying basic humanitarian food and household items to enter Gaza each day — a tenth of the volume it allowed under the two-month ceasefire that ended in March."
A tenth of the aid.
