While companies like Netflix have worked to reduce their overall carbon footprint, none of that matters if the datacenters are constructed poorly, inefficiently, and in unsuitable locations where they disrupt the local everything.

And to be clear, this isn't a pro-AI post, it's pro-nuance.

The water problem is about datacenters. The problem isn't that AI uses water (that's just cloud computation and the internet at large); it's the unsustainable approach that these companies are taking towards datacenter construction to fuel their AI. Noise, water supply, the "brute force" mindset.

What big companies are doing with image and video generation takes up way more, but the problem with people using AI for chatbots and text prompts isn't water consumption. An hour of 4k video can take up to .5L of water, which is the same as about 200 text queries.

I am begging anyone concerned about datacenter water usage and AI to look into how much water streaming an hour of HD video takes. Generating things other than text is one thing, but we need to criticize the correct things if we want to look like we know what we're talking about.
