My latest read. As part of my dive into sci-fi canon, this is my first Asimov book. It was both inventive & a product of its times the 1950’s with nuclear powered everything & no female representation except for a single woman with 3 or 4 lines. Thanks @bklynlibrary.bsky.social for the loan #booksky

My latest completed read. It’s consider a classic sci-fi book & after reading I can see why. It’s tech heavy hard science fiction with detailed world building & interesting characters. There is a subtle cliff-hanger at the end #booksky
My latest audiobook. It’s an interesting examination of how genetics, the brain, the nervous system outside the brain, environment & childhood experiences interact to influence human behavior. The author emphasizes the complexity & that we are only just starting to understand it. 💙📚 #booksky
The recipe, spicy ‘nduja-tomato sauce is from serious eats, a free site. ‘Nduja is a type of salami but it’s soft & spreadable. It was a new ingredient for me. The brand was not spicy at all. It was also not as salty as I expected for a salami. 2/2 🍽️🍜 #foodsky www.seriouseats.com/spicy-nduja-...
Dinner was another pasta dish. I am. A big fan of pasta recipes for taste, ease of making one-pot meals & quicker clean up. This was quick, less than 30 minutes start to finish & only had 5 ingredients. Recipe below 1/2 #foodsky #cooking
The recipe is another from the New York Times. It’s a creation of the author Ali Slagle & not some traditional pasta dish as far as I know. The recipe calls for 12oz of fettuccine but there was more than enough sauce for a full 16oz package. 2/2 cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1025...
Lunch was this quick lamb ragu with artichokes. It was a quick recipe, 30 minutes from start to finish. Lamb is a meat I rarely cook, but I’ve taken to using ground lamb the past few weeks. Recipe below 1/2 #foodsky #cooking
While running errands this morning I saw parrots & the nest they are building. In NYC. I heard them before I saw them. Loud little suckers. #parrotsofnyc #birding
The recipe is from The New York Times. There are many variations freely available on other sites. The recipe called for 1.5lbs of ground lamb. The package I had was only 1lb & I think the recipe was better with less meat. 2/2 🍽️🍜 #foodsky
For dinner I made lamb pulao. It’s spiced found lamb & rice. During the Covid shutdown I made lots of South Asian food, mostly dals. Since then I have not made many Indian recipes. I’ve planned on an Indian themed week but I get distracted by shiny new recipes lol. Recipe below 1/2 #foodsky #cooking
Yes, I do a lot. Most of my posts on Bluesky are food I’ve cooked, almost all of them are recipes I’ve made for the first time.
The recipe is from America’s Test Kitchen but there are many versions on free sites. It was unusual for adding coconut oil at the end. It called for plum tomatoes but supermarket ones are awful, so I used grape tomatoes. 2/2 🍽️🍜 www.americastestkitchen.com/recipes/1438...
Brunch lentils. That should be a thing. I made masoor dal, another red lentil stew, this one South Asian. I have a lot of red lentils lol. It’s a lot of ingredients but quick and easy to make. Bloom spices in oil, add lentils & water, then tomato & cilantro. Recipe below 1/2 #foodsky #cooking
The recipe was from America’s Test Kitchen. I already had berebe spice mix but this recipe said that could be hard to find and the store bough mixed often have powdered ginger & fresh ginger gives a better result. 2/2 #foodsky 🍜🍽️ www.americastestkitchen.com/recipes/1712...
I made another red lentil stew. This is misir wot, an Ethiopian recipe. It traditionally uses the spice mix berbere, but this recipe adds a little bit of a lot of different spices instead. Recipe below 1/2 #foodsly #cooking
I made this red lentil dal, riffing with the ingredients I already had in my kitchen. I used aromatics (onion, garlic, ginger) with tomato passata after I bloomed the spices, cumin, coriander, turmeric & gram masala. For heat I added a couple of Thai bird chilies. 🍽️🍜 #foodsky #cooking
Last night I saw a movie the Japan Society @japansociety.org Blind Woman’s Curse. I saw Stray Cat Rock there earlier. They were part of a series showing the films of Meiji Kaji, an actress famous for her action roles. Her films. Lady Snowblood in particular, inspired Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill.
I went to SciCafe again at the @amnh.org again this evening. The pun of the topic was about why all marine mammals are warm blooded but only about 40 of 33,000 of fish are. The speaker did a great job of balancing sophisticated science with an entertaining narrative. #AMNH #SciCafe
*correlation with toxic stress & poor health
My latest audiobook. The author is a practicing doctor who seeing correlation with toxic stress in children & poor, examined the research & found causation. She put that knowledge into real life treatment which had positive outcomes then advocated for its wider use. Thanks NY Public Library #booksky
I received free books as part of a promotion (hardcovers!) I haven’t read a courtroom thriller. I’ve worked on civil trials & real courtroom scenes are surprisingly tame, almost boring. I didn’t see the movie The Firm & the Widow is a recent book. I’m looking forward to reading John Grisham #booksky
My latest completed read. The topic is the dawn of sailing & sea travel. The author, appropriately, was an accomplished sailor & archeologist. He describes the history of locales around the globe & adds his own experience sailing those same waters. Thanks NY Public Library #booksky #NYPL
Velveting meat and shioxiang wine are keys to make home cooked meals taste like Chinese, or Chinese American take-out at least.
My latest read, it’s the pick of a LGBTQA+ book club. It’s an interesting mix of trans & feminist philosophy and the effects of cultural & personal trauma. Those are introduced through masks that hide identity & give power with the help of AI technology. Thanks @qplnyc.bsky.social #booksky
Thanks, I’ve set a goal to read one book from each scifi classic author
My latest completed read. This is a classic scifi novel written by an expert author. I see the appeal of Vonnegut’s books & writing style. The story started as comic but evolved into social commentary with a poignant ending. Thanks NY Public Library for the loan. #booksky #NYPL
I sautéed some onion until soft, added garlic, tomato paste & jarred Calabrian chilies then waited a minute & added chicken broth, canned beans, salchichon sausage & oregano. I simmered it for an hour. It was a bit salty, but otherwise very good.
Brunch beans. I decided to make something other than typical breakfast food & just with things I had on hand. This is stewed cannellini beans. It’s not a published recipe, I improvised with pantry items. Recipe below 1/2 #foodsky #cooking
While spring cleaning I’ve been catching up on audiobooks. The author describes refrigeration in warehouses, shipping & homes. It sounded dull but the interesting part was how it transformed agriculture, retail & home cooking. It was a SciFri book club pic & I understand why they picked it. #booksky
This an audiobook that I picked up again after not finishing. I agree with the critics. The author made a narrative interesting but skewed the facts. He over emphasizes scientists & environmentalists failures & downplays industry & republicans culpability. Thanks @bklynlibrary.bsky.social #booksky
