I’m so honoured to be featured in Stories of WIN this month - sharing my career journey and how storytelling changed everything for me! 🧪🎙️
Posts by Nancy Padilla-Coreano
I had a great time talking to Meenakshi about my trajectory through neuroscience!
Tune in for electric fish, imaging the hypothalamus, and trying to find a path in theory that stays relevant to the brain. Also, my early phd experiences of trying to do science when real life rears its head.
Inspired by mentoring students who aspire MD-PhDs, I decide to interview @brianmsweis.bsky.social who is very passionate and knowledgeable about physician scientist education. If you are a trainee considering this path, or mentoring a trainee who is considering this path, please listen!!
My lab is hiring a technician at @UFNeuroscience! 🧠🐭 We use in vivo ephys, optogenetics & machine learning to study how the brain controls social behavior.
Looking for rodent research & mentorship experience — please repost & share!

Thank you to our rising stars @drnancypadilla.bsky.social, Jie Zheng and @marissascavuzzo.bsky.social, and to moderator @franciscorr25.bsky.social for leading an insightful conversation on shaping the future of neuroscience. We appreciate the support of all of those who came out.
🤓 So grateful to learn from powerhouses like Erin and @huda-akil.bsky.social during our Stories of WiN panel. We spoke about defining your legacy in science & beyond and a clear theme emerged: do science & lead according to your values.

Together, our findings suggest that social context and hierarchy shape reward processing in ways that extend beyond competition & continue to influence how the brain responds to reward, even when no one else is around.
What surprised us most was that social rank effects on neural activity were strongest when mice received awards ALONE, not during competition.
We also found that dominant and subordinate mice showed distinct activation patterns across prefrontal and subcortical regions.
(3/6)
When mice were alone, we saw widespread coordination across prefrontal & subcortical regions. But in social contexts, whether competitive or not, these network correlations largely disappeared. This suggests that social context fundamentally reorganizes how these circuits talk to each other!
(2/6)
We compared mice receiving rewards in three contexts: alone, with a cagemate (non-competitive), or competing for the same reward. Surprisingly, the non-competitive social context drove the highest overall brain activation across regions.
(1/6) We have a new paper out in #eNeuro!
How does the brain’s reward processing change across social contexts? We mapped brain activity (cFos) & found that social context reshapes how reward circuits are coordinated🐭🏆
