I always thought it started with Herzl, but it wouldn't surprise me if it had Christian roots. Seems very popular with American evangelical Christians.

My parents very much bought into it, as I think many Jewish families did. I think it's because zionists succeeded in attaching it to Judaism (even though that makes no sense). It became an article of faith, and where faith is concerned people suspend critical thinking.

I actually did the kibbutz thing in the '70s. I was 18 and was a zionist; zionism spread throughout jewish communities in the 50s and 60s. That was no accident. Zionists work by scaring jews, and they used the holocaust to scare us, then said "that's why we need Israel".
