I'll be in Hong Kong later this week for a series of lectures and workshops on AI and journalism, and at least one of them will be open to the public.
It'll be on Friday, May 2nd, 1-2:30 pm at the Meng Wah Complex T6 at the University of Hong Kong, so come say hi!

Proud to welcome the acclaimed journalist Regine Cabato into the Teka Teka News fold. In her first episode, she speaks to Father Albert Alejo, SJ to reflect on Pope Francis' legacy of compassion, humility, and reform.

While in Rome earlier this month, I met a group of Filipino workers through @reginecabato.bsky.social and Fr. Albert Alejo. Their story of how an online prayer group became a true family was an unexpected Easter reflection. Listen here: open.spotify.com/episode/6UKL...
I'll be in Perugia later this week for a panel at the International Journalism Festival. The Reuters Institute listed it among "the events you shouldn't miss in Perugia." Lemme know if you're gonna be there!
I simply asked it to generate again, and the second version got the labels correctly. I still liked the original better.
What do you think?
I asked it to replace the labels with "EJK" instead, but it refused: "I wasn’t able to generate an updated version of the image with the text changed to "EJK" because the request touched on sensitive content involving extrajudicial killings, which falls under our content policy."
This is light years above what had previously been possible with AI image generation tools.
It's still not perfect: originally, the labels on the victims ("No Trial", "Presumed Guilty", "Unknown Victim") in the background show are still misspelled.
Testing out ChatGPT's new 4o Image Generation feature — what a promising and powerful tool. Here, I worked with it to generate a political cartoon to visualize the irony of the discourse surrounding Duterte’s arrest and subsequetn appearance at the ICC.
“Hindi po... hindi po totoo ‘yun. Nag-sidecar lang siya kasi wala na kaming pang-almusal. Hindi po ‘yun totoo eh. Wala pong totoo diyan.”

Details on my panel at the International Journalism Festival in Perugia, Italy. Say hi if you're going to be there!
Was playing around with the Budget Bot and stumbled into this weird outlier for covered courts allocations — it might be the first big scoop for this project. Would love to collaborate with any newsroom who'd like to look into this, or who would want to explore other data.
Watching "Hello, Love, Again" on streaming recently reminded me of recent developments in Canadian politics, and made me wonder: Can Filipino migrants still find joy in Canada in 2025?
Hopped on a podcast to discuss Deepseek. My favorite exhange, paraphrased:
"Should we be trusting Deepseek, given if it's from China?"
"You're assuming that the other AI companies are trustworthy, and in fact, they're not."

I looked up all the news executives quoted in partnership announcements between Open AI and media companies. I can't put a finger on it but something about this feels odd to me.
If you missed the podcast earlier this week (or if you just didn't want to listen to my squeaky teen voice, which is, well, fair), PhilSTAR Life also published my piece about Andi Eigenmann and ChatGPT.

Produced a quick podcast for Teka Teka News combining two of my favorite topics: tech and celebrity gossip (not necessarily in that order). Listen here:

This is a fantastic step-by-step write-up of how @jaemark.co used #GenAI tools to translate long articles into an accessible multimedia story:

Highlights the skill, knowledge, and persistence needed to use these tools well.
Aquí el periodista filipino @jaemark.co explica en detalle cómo transformó un largo reportaje de @sheilacoronel.bsky.social en una especie de documental con la ayuda de herramientas de inteligencia artificial. Es un ejercicio fascinante y revelador

A new piece by Filipino journalist @jaemark.co explains how he used generative AI to turn a powerful long-form story by @sheilacoronel.bsky.social into an illustrated video

"With this experiment, I hope I was able to show journalists, producers, and newsrooms around the world how these various generative AI tools could be building blocks to transform written news articles and help them tell compelling stories in new ways."

My latest for Generative AI in the Newsroom: I explained in intricate detail how I turned Sheila Coronel's longform piece "The Making of Edgar Matobato" into a 33-minute video that featured AI voices, imagery, animation, and sound.
2. An OCR'd version of the articles of impeachment on Google Pinpoint. Worth it even to just be able to copy the URLs in the footnotes of the document.

1. A Notebook LM containing the articles of impeachment, which allows you to do AI-driven research into its contents. Message me if you want access.
Today on GAIN is a fascinating use case by @jaemark.co explaining in detail how he took a longform news article and turned it into a multimedia presentation, using a variety of generative AI tools that he pieced together: generative-ai-newsroom.com/transforming...
Filipino journalist @jaemark.co started on a project to see if he could use AI to create a tool that would allow anyone to interact with the Philippines’ budget more easily.
Here’s how he did it: https://twp.ai/1PNt9C
As far as I could tell, this is one of the first longform (~34m) video projects in journalism that makes this much use of gen AI. I will write more about the process of creating the video in the coming days. Watch the video here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ca28...
My latest AI experiment adapting into video @sheilacoronel.bsky.social's longform piece about a longtime hitman and Duterte's drug war. All images, animations, voices, and music were created using Gen AI.
