This is a must listen for all educators with 2 of my favourite Canadian education advocates!
Spring is trying valiantly to arrive in the Cariboo, but it's a struggle.

New snow and a new episode of Chalk and Talk made feeding Tonya much nicer! The effects of declining math skills on science education is distressing! Well worth listening to!

Nate, sometimes you are too Canadian! πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦
I was trained to be a RR teacher. I thought I was being given THE BEST, researched model for teaching emergent readers. But after I looked at the evidence, I changed my practice.
RR teachers are dedicated, but it's time they looked at the research.

I just finished listening while out doing some chores. Both of you touched on a number of things I've been thinking about too!
I had a few extra listeners, while I was outside too!

I stepped out of my comfort zone to ask a question about structured literacy vs balanced literacy and curriculum changes. Well worth a listen, if you’re interested in best practices for teaching kids to read!

You’re welcome, Marc! It’s great to connect to another structured literacy advocate in Canada! πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦
The Ministry of Ed. In BC is still very reluctant to change their curriculum to structured literacy, and the more voices we have saying it’s more effective for our struggling readers, the better!

I have to admit, I called in to ask a question, when it started to look like the callers weren't directing the discussion in a productive way, but by the time I asked my question, you had both nailed lots of important issues on the topic!
I should have had more confidence!

I'm so excited to listen to your interview!
I'm a little apprehensive about what you could say "out of pocket," but I'm sure it will be interesting!

This is such good news! Having used UFLI as a tutor for over a year, I am not surprised by its effectiveness, especially as Tier 1 instruction.

Universities will have to improve their teaching degrees or face consequences. The reactions have been mixed Universities will be given two years to overhaul their education degrees or risk losing their accreditation as part of a national bid to fix Australia's teacher shortage.

There's a lot of resistance to change, particularly at teacher colleges: "Universities given two years to overhaul teaching degrees after education ministers' meeting." #edchat #bcedchat www.abc.net.au/news/2023-07...

It's really unfortunate that BCEd's usual suspects are so resistant to change. We can only hope that continued grass roots pressure and research evidence around learning will force them to change their ways.

"There is no curriculum police."

I find this statement both alarming and insulting. My role as an educator isn't just to teach, it's to ensure students have learned.

Georgia State University accused of teaching β€˜debunked’ reading methods Multiple states have banned a method used to teach children to read for decades, but it’s still allowed in Georgia.

First the news of a law suit against Fountas & Pinnell and now a university is being (rightfully) questioned about its literacy programming.

I wonder what BC's universities are promoting or endorsing in their preservice ed. programs...πŸ€”
