KNOW-PH Evidence Summary Compendium: Active Travel, Air Quality, Food Takeaways, HIAs & Housing The Know-PH’s first Deep Dive co-design topic was ‘Housing’, selected through a process of surveys with local government Public Health professionals, literature and dialogue with the funder. Please note that this work is not a systematic or scoping review of all the literature and evidence available. It does provide potential evidence sources for engagement within and across Local Authorities. The work focused primarily on NIHR research evidence with other sources sought to help bridge gaps in knowledge. Other sources of evidence included evidence from other funders, policy and evidence papers. Drawing on the evidence and in collaboration with our partner organisations, PPIE and the NIHR the topic of housing was identified as the focus for the Deep Dive 1. Emerging from this work, we examined the use of HIAs in the development of local plans and large housing developments. This work was updated in January 2025. Contents 1. Active Travel Research Overviews ( NIHR funded, other studies reviews and reports) Updated January 2025.2. Air Quality Domestic Indoor and Outdoor Research Overviews ( NIHR funded, other studies reviews and reports) Updated January 2025.3. Added Value: Highlighting the importance of health impact assessments for housing developers, communities and key decision makers in England (Presentation slides) These are the slides from our 5th KNOW-PH webinar which looked at highlighting the importance of health impact assessments.Health Impact Assessments (HIAs) are often required by Local Authorities (LAs) when submitting planning applications for new domestic housing developments. Developers often experience delays in securing planning approvals as the quality, depth and complexity of the HIAs are often variable. A plethora of HIA templates are available, the generic content of which may not meet the needs of key decision makers. This webinar draws on recent workshops KNOW-PH hosted with three Local Authorities across England where NIHR research evidence, practice and policy evidence and experience of HIAs were discussed.Using an example of fast food outlets and the rise in home delivery services we discuss the potential impact and value which robust HIAs can bring to local communities.Drawing on multiple forms of evidence we identified areas of practice which could align the process of using HIAs to support the need to consider the building blocks of health as key to long-term gains for developers, decision makers, local economies and communities beyond the completion of new developments. We propose that there is a need for a shared language and dialogue of health impact assessments, understanding the commercial leverage which HIAs afford for developers, robust community intelligence and the pivotal role housing plays in determining individual and community health outcomes.

It was an event where participants explored the KNOW-PH synthesised work and discuss key aspects involved in generating community champions. The KNOW-PH team reviewed the information collected from the evidence base along with key areas of discussion from the event to produce the resource. 8/9

Together the KNOW-PH team and HCC collaborated to focus on how to create cleaner air community champions. The KNOW-PH team considered the existing published evidence base while HCC brought together local authorities across the East of England region.

Despite the health burden there is still a lack of awareness in the public domain or any national co-ordinated public health cleaner air campaigning available to provide trusted information on the health impacts of short and long term air pollution.

The Royal College of Physicians 2025 report, 'A breathe of fresh air', estimated that around 30,000 deaths per year in the UK are as a result of air pollution. Alongside this, an economic cost of £27bn in the UK due to healthcare costs, productivity losses, reduced quality of life.

Air pollution can impact human health, the economy, and the environment. In many instances air quality has been improving in recent years, however poor air quality is still the largest environmental risk to public health in the UK.
