Opting out of paying one’s taxes to provide a public good because one is paying for a private version should absolutely not be allowed. Private health care or education should not be tax deductible. That said, it should be legal to purchase such services, as the larger market will provide more.

Free market vs public provision is usually best decided on the regularity of the need for it, with the most regular needs served by the former, and the less consistent best served by the provision of public goods. But within that frame, yes, it should work the same for everyone.
I believed this as a proud Canadian regarding the health care system, but a counter-factual I ran into in the Taiwanese health system changed my mind. The availability of paying for private testing has caused a huge amount of investment in testing services, which has huge benefits.
