What were the 1941 Phillies doing while Joe DiMaggio was making history? A post from writers’ past

@justinklugh.bsky.social has a new book out about the dogged, doomed 1941 Phillies, and their quest to just make it through the season as the world watched Joe DiMaggio become a legend.

It’s very funny, a little tragic, and full of unforgettable stories about a forgotten team. Well worth your time.

It’s not Bedlam at the Bank, but Lunacy at LoanDepot is also pretty good.

Happy Kyle Schwarber's Birthday/Kent Tekulve’s Birthday/Sam Thompson’s birthday to all who celebrate!

This should be a citywide holiday in Philadelphia.

Alec Bohm has been a bit worse at home than on the road for the past three seasons. So I did some detective work as to why over at TGP.

Pre-Code Decode: ELMER THE GREAT shows how much and little baseball has changed — Moviejawn by by Jared Frank, Staff Writer Baseball fans at the time would’ve recognized aspects of this plot from reality: fourteen years earlier, members of the Chicago White Sox intentionally sandbagged the ...

Long before Moneyball, Hollywood was making baseball movies. And long before Pete Rose, gambling had wormed its way into the sport. I took a look at Elmer the Great, a 1933 baseball and gambling flick, for @moviejawn.com www.moviejawn.com/home/2025/7/...

Wheeler’s Pitches are Upper Crust Except for one that’s seemingly gone stale.

Today’s Phillies game is starting 10 minutes late, so why not use them to read about Wheeler’s new tweaks to his arsenal?

Long story short: the Phillies ace has found a few ways to get even better… but one of his best pitches has gone backwards.

Maybe you call Phillies-Pirates a rivalry. Maybe you don’t. Either way, there’s some fun history between the two, which I looked at for TGP:

I mean, there’s some upsides. It’ll probably help me with Immaculate Grid, at least.

We’re recapping the season of a decade ago at The Good Phight. I hadn’t yet joined the ranks of the Phaithful then, so this was my first look at that season…

I’m not going to force a musical reference into ALL of my recap titles this season… but so far I’m 2 for 2.

I’ve wanted to use this recap title since the news of the Luzardo trade broke, so I’m delighted that I got to do it today.

I also indulged myself with a half-dozen other Genesis references in there, if you wanna do a scavenger hunt…

I am an avowed enthusiast of the Baseball Zen segments on MLB.TV, but I do have to question whether a clip of bees swarming around a dugout really qualifies as zen.

A pitcher coming off of a 0-win campaign getting the season’s first start! A guy with a jetpack! The science of “slugology”! I took a look at some of the stranger headlines from Phillies Opening Days past.

If you’ve ever wanted to read a poem about the Rhys Hoskins bat slam game, I wrote one, and it’s in here! Unlike Casey at the Bat, it has a happy ending for the good guys.

Phillies Spring Training Headlines Through The Ages The news of yesterday, today!

It’s a beautiful Saturday morning. You could spend it reading up about the latest news from Spring Training. Or you could spend it reading spring headlines from several decades ago. I gathered some of the better ones over @thegoodphight.bsky.social

Pokémon comes to Citizens Bank Park Gotta Catch ‘em All is pretty good advice for baseball players, too

Pitchers and catchers have reported, so there’s plenty of actual baseball to talk about.

That being said, my latest for @thegoodphight.bsky.social is about Pokémon. www.thegoodphight.com/2025/2/14/24...

There’s a few dozen Phillies in Cooperstown, but only one named to Japan’s Baseball Hall of Fame. Had to pay my respects to Lefty while visiting.

That’s right! Come one, come all, for the most Thanksgiving fun you can have without anyone asking you to pass the mashed potatoes.

I feel good about giving Marchan a bigger role as the main backup for 2025, although the jury will probably be out for a while, given how long it’ll take for someone playing only occasionally to build up enough of a sample size to assess.

BJTIB: Realmuto in Review There are other J.T.s, but this one is ours

Over at @thegoodphight.bsky.social I asked the big questions about J.T. Realmuto. How should we think about his batting in 2024? How do we evaluate his defense? Why can’t I ever remember if it’s “J.T.” or “JT”? www.thegoodphight.com/2024/11/20/2...

New week, old scorecard! This slightly trippy 1952 scorecard comes from the St. Louis Browns and features a grinning mascot soon to be known as Brownie.

Sadly, Brownie had little to smile about: the Browns decamped for Baltimore just a few years later.

For Veterans Day, a pair of appropriate scorecards. Cubs from 1943 and Phillies from 1944, (in their short-lived Blue Jays era), complete with poem about enlisted players.
